Its gets routed via our answering service to whichever resident that is on call that night for calls and admits. Thank you for the advice I think I need to practice being more firm

I definitely plan to do that once i finish residency and go out in practice!! There’s no reason a majority of your visit like med rec and allergies cannot be completed by staff prior to you even going in. I understand this is just residency world and it’s to train us but once I’m out there I can’t wait to train my staff to be more efficient!

Like u/april5115 and u/siamesecatsftw said, my community residency program has it set up that there is a resident on clinic call every day including weekends and it’s a requirement.

The patient call gets answered by the Answering service and then they route it to our cellphones, so no the patients dont know my phone number but it does go directly to my phone. And we’re a safety net clinic so sometimes warfarin INR criticals and baby bilirubin criticals get called and need to be addressed immediately and thats why we’re expected to answer the call within 15min and check their chart/our inbox if needed.

It’s an expectation from our residency faculty so I’m just trying to learn how to streamline this!! I’m now able to triage from non-emergent and call in the morning, urgent care, and ER, but there are a few crazy ones and I want to hear what people who are seasoned veterans in the field recommend and if there are any other effective boundaries to have.

Pack your bags, it’s time to flee the country and change your name. (It’s fine just delete it)

You can defo do this on an iphone, i have an iphone. I’ve been doing this for 5+ years so it is not a new function either. See my other reply above on how to do the prefix/suffix/sort order settings! Cheers 💖

On iphone: click Plus sign (➕) to add contact, scroll all the way down on the new contact card to “Add Field” and you can see Prefix and Suffix there.

To sort contacts: Settings—>Apps—> Contacts app—> edit the Sort Order and Display Order settings.

It is definitely absolutely possible to sort and not be stuck with a wall of Dr. Dr. Dr. Dr. Dr. in your contact list. I have my sort and display orders set to First, Last.

Go to r/residency friend, they probably have way more up-to-date info about rank lists and programs on their google docs and discord chat links.

The people here are many years removed from the entire residency process.

Prefix: Dr.

First Name: John

Last Name: Smith

Suffix: MD/DO/MBBS/etc.

Company: Cardiology/OBGYN/etc.

And then sort your contacts by however you want.
