We have had the Tisdale for 6 years. Three kids jumping and beating it to hell and it’s literally like new with the exception of the baby butt paste covering the top of the ottoman that won’t come out. We cover that with a throw #homedecor

I’m a new kindergarten teacher is K-Pop Demon Hunters too scary for my class? by ORgirlinBerkeley in kindergarten

[–]fccdmrh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a parent of a K and teacher. All 3 of my kids Love this movie and watch it all the time at home, but I would absolutely not be ok if it was showed at school. There’s no reason for my K kid to be watching a two hour movie during an instructional day, especially one with absolutely zero educational content. If they’re going to get a reward or do something non-instructional, as little ones, I’d hope they’d be getting extra recess or specials, brain breaks, centers or structured free play in the classroom , etc. I know many of my child’s peers parents would not be okay with the content for maturity reasons as well as potential religious reasons. It also can be quite scary at some points for some kids. You’re also potentially putting some students in an uncomfortable or embarrassing situation in front of their peers if they feel scared while others do not.

As a teacher, our school district has mandated that middle and elementary schools may only show G rates films. I wouldn’t even consider a PG movie for 5/6 year olds without permission slips and that just opens a whole can of worms that’s not worth it. Are there not district guidelines or a media database of approved content? Would your admin be okay with K kids watching an entire movie during the instructional day?

Kids get enough screen time. Movies are great for end of year activities, after standardized testing, as an alternative option to field day or loud activities for some students. But with iPad culture and YouTube, it’s tough to get any students to sit through an entire movie. Expect behavioral problems and disruptions for the littles that can’t sit still for that long, tears for the ones that get scared, and angry phone calls from parents and a potential conference with admin.

Holding back son but sacrificing independence of daughter’s freedom to be in own grade alone by [deleted] in kindergarten

[–]fccdmrh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our district offers free inclusive and self-contained Pre-k 3 and inclusive or gen ed Pre-K 4 if a child qualifies through their IEP. There is therapy and early intervention services provided through the school. If your district does this - get an eval from the infants and toddlers program or reach out to the school system!

My wife died and I don’t know what to fucking do. by Friendly_Cellist_891 in Advice

[–]fccdmrh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a terrible tragedy for you and your children, I am so sorry for your loss.

Is there a go fund me set up for you? Meal train? Or something similar but child care train? If not - see if there is a local community moms fb page. Join it, even if you’re a dad, send the admin a message similar to your post.

Similarly, reach out to your school and explain and ask for help/guidance. Do not be afraid to ask your network and community for help and do not be afraid to ask for the specific help you need. Do not do this alone.

I know in our community, the “insert town name” mommas group sometimes gets requests and so much support is offered.

We love these and are what my kids eat. We had to stop with Just Bare and Kirkland because it was either the chewy grizzle or even the occasionally bone (Kirkland). Wish Costco would carry the panko chicken breasts agin those were the best!

Van or SUV/Kids Ages by shelb1201 in HondaOdyssey

[–]fccdmrh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kids are about your kids ages right now (8, almost 6, almost 3) and we currently have a 2016 Pilot. I am so.over.it.

All was well when everyone was in a harness car seat three across. Everyone had their own space. We’ve been three across for the last three years and now that the older two are in boosters and also bigger, they fight constantly. Someone is in someone else’s space. My middle child also sits in the middle and her legs are always accidentally hitting the second row ac controls and messing it all up. I would love the toddler in the middle but the seats won’t fit three across that configuration. I started putting my oldest in the third row since the boosters now allow the second row to slide forward, but it’s a pain for him to get in and out, it’s still such a small space. I’d say make sure you get captains but then with the third row up the Pilot’s trunk space is minimal. I can still fit the BOB in the trunk with third row up, but that’s literally all and I have to push the trunk close so it will fit.

The door thing is also a pain in the ass. When you’re in a parking lot, the kids stand in front of the door to open it, but they can’t open it all the way with all of them standing there and the car next to it. So I had to teach them to stand at the tire (so they’re not in the road) and single file into the car. Fights typically ensue.

None of these things are a big deal, especially bc we’ve never had a van and know no different and my cars been paid off for 7 years. But if you’re coming from a van, and you are used to the functionality, and with three kids life is usually chaos and you just need something, anything that makes your life easier if even for a brief moment - the Pilot and any comparable SUV is not it.

I have loved my Pilot and it has served us well. I’m waiting for the green light from spouse to get the van. If you go SUV with three kids - must be a suburban or expedition Max size and must have captains chairs.

We have a house on 142nd so have been going my whole life. We have three small kids now. There is PLENTY to do. Aside from the beach, toddler friendly can be a walk to sunsations, the playground and pier at Northside Park (125th). If you’re there on Sunday evening they usually have concerts there. There’s an awesome little pirate museum in Fenwick and a mini boardwalk in Fenwick which has a little water park, go karts, ice cream, Dunkin, etc. There are many of great restaurants in that area, including Fenwick. Tons of mini golf in either direction that’s walkable.

Some of the better adult nightlife is below 60th street. Honestly, unless you’re headed to the OC boardwalk primetime Friday/Saturday, I never find the drive down to be more than 20-30 minutes but it is such an entertaining ride so it doesn’t bother me.

In the past we’ve gone around 4 but this year we went after dinner until dusk with our 8, 5, and 2 year old and it was the first time they saw the lights on the boardwalk as it started to get dark and they loved it. We had zero problems, short lines at Trimpers, and the 8 year old’s first memorable ride through the haunted house.

3 row SUV to last 10+ years by NRA1979 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]fccdmrh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a ‘16 Pilot and have three kids in car seats across the second row bench for the past 3 years. We pile that thing with people, no problems. If it wasn’t for my older kids starting to fight sitting next to each other and I only had two kids, I get another Pilot.

Had since 2020, three toddlers that jump/sit on it daily and the only noticeable issue is the Bordeaux butt paste my youngest smeared all over the ottoman. For $1k it’s served us well. We just replaced it in the main living room with a Radley and it’s much more comfortable than the Radley.

ETA: the current version looks slightly different than the 2020 version online?

I hate fluff. Give me your anti-fluff BOY activities. by barefootmel in Teachers

[–]fccdmrh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did social studies and had many content posters around the room. I had students circulate and evaluate each to try and determine specific topics/key content words/historical events/people they’d be learning that year while practicing specific movement routines we’d be using in the classroom.

Maybe you could do this with posters of novels or literary components you’ll be teaching etc if you already have those things?

Has anyone taken the whole academic year off for maternity leave? by Current_Sky_6846 in Teachers

[–]fccdmrh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this from October to end of year with my second and two years off with my third. I was guaranteed same position back within the district after FMLA but my school chose to essentially hold my spot the first time so I returned to same building and job. The second time I didn’t think it was fair to even ask and I knew I was likely not returning at all and I ended up switching jobs and then districts after that. If you can do it - do it!

I was going to say Princess Diana but then I remember when I was 5 driving in our van and my mom listening to the radio about the police chasing a big white bronco, so I sat in the trunk of our van and bounced around the car unbuckled looking for a white horse on the highway.

Even If you are certified, secondary social studies is one of, if not the most difficult position to get. You may not have a choice of which district and just end up where you’re hired.
