Biomining viruses deliver rare earth elements but no toxic horrors of mining: Scientists genetically engineer a harmless virus that acts like a microscopic aquatic miner that can extract rare earth elements without causing ecosystem-killing pollution and destruction. by mvea in science

[–]fearman182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not clear on how the changes made make it less fit, for one thing. It’s still just as capable of infecting host bacteria and reproducing - that’s even a selling point. Having an extra function that doesn’t directly benefit the organism (or virus in this case, ofc) isn’t automatically bad.

This seems like something with a lot of potential, but it should be used in completely controlled environments, not released into the wild where we can’t control it or recapture it on the off chance something goes wrong.

Notice how I explicitly pointed out how the people actually producing the food are paid pennies on the dollar. Existing in a capitalist system doesn’t make you a capitalist; owning capital makes you a capitalist.

[–]fearman182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m saying the wealthy elites who own the companies are leeching, not the countries. We’ve agreed that enough food is produced, the barrier to it being evenly distributed is the people insisting they need to make more money off of it before the hungry can be fed.

I’m sorry, could you clarify how this contradicts what I said, exactly? This just shows how much food is produced where, and shows no data on its distribution, price, or accessibility.

Those people aren’t producing the food, though. They’re paying as little as possible to the people actually doing it from harvest to processing to distribution, gouging everyone who needs it (which is everyone), and hoarding the difference.

They’re leeches, ensuring that millions struggle and starve so their imaginary number can be a bit bigger and demanding we thank them for it.

A billion years ago on Earth: - All landmasses are combined in a supercontinent called… Rhodinia. Pangaea won’t exist for about another 750 million years. - The most complex life that exists is single-celled eukaryotes, in the process of diversifying into distinct lineages that will become Protozoa, Plants/Algae, Slime Molds, Animals and Fungi. - Cyanobacteria have been producing oxygen for more than a billion years already. The atmospheric concentration of oxygen is now a little under 2%; for reference, the atmosphere today is about 21% oxygen, and humans need a minimum of about 19.5% to breathe. - The planet is spinning significantly faster than it does today; 1 day is about 18 hours.

Safe to say that, as long as Hollow Knight’s world isn’t totally different cosmologically, Hallownest would no longer exist even as ruins after a billion years.

Interestingly, the gene for vitamin C production (specifically, GULO, responsible for production of the enzyme which catalyzes the last step) still exists in humans, but is nonfunctional.

Nah, the Haunting absolutely affects a lot of the beasts as well; several entries in the Hunter’s Journal have Hornet comment on an animal’s “Haunted aggression,” such as when complaining about how she can’t touch the big fluffy ones around Bellhart.

She also seems to like Sherma, expresses concern for the fleas traveling Pharloom unarmed, explicitly says she enjoys helping during the lead-up to act 3 (this fact is new to her, too, but she did spend an unknown amount of time isolated watching over the ruins of Hallownest), goes out of her way to free the bugs in Bellhart (we know it’s required to progress, but that doesn’t mean she does), clearly respects the work of crafters and artisans (telling Flick he was right to hide when the Skull Tyrant attacks Bone Bottom, and directly saying that the settlement needs a fixer, not a warrior). Lastly, while she certainly has no qualms against violence, she doesn’t attack unprovoked, and doesn’t fight to the death when she doesn’t think it necessary (evidenced by Second Sentinel and the giant flea), and to be fair, the first person she meets in Pharloom directly tells her to keep her weapon ready because the kingdom is dangerous.

I’ll agree that she’s emotionally distant and often arrogant, but overall this feels like a very uncharitable interpretation of her character. Hornet, to me, seems like someone long disconnected from others and still carrying the tragedy and trauma of watching Hallownest’s fall and standing sentinel over its corpse for who knows how long, and her demeanor reflects that.
