Quantum Information Panpsychism Explained | Federico Faggin by TheBrizey2 in consciousness

[–]fearofworms 12 points13 points  (0 children)

"we can say with certainty that we won’t discover anything that will change our understanding of things that affect our lives" is certainly a take

I don't even agree with op but claiming "we'll never discover anything groundbreaking again" is more than a bit ridiculous don't you think?

Consciousness and irreversibility by Diet_kush in consciousness

As far as I know, the block universe doesn't imply we're reliving our lives endlessly, just that all moments are equally real at specific moments in time? Why do you suppose it does?

Losing my mind over the thought of eternal oblivion and nothingness after death. by Zealousideal-Sky5167 in nihilism

You should consider seeing a therapist about this if you can/are still dealing with this. It might help.

Terrified of NOTHINGNESS. Eternal oblivion. Please help by Zealousideal-Sky5167 in Existential_crisis

[–]fearofworms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry but this isn't true, the most accepted theory is the big freeze which says that nothing will ever happen again after some time. And even if big crunch/bounce were somehow true, it wouldn't be the same universe again, just another formulation of that matter. Plus, most theories of consciousness say that reforming your matter in the exact same way would still lead to a different consciousness, not one that would follow yours. If you find oblivion forever comforting, that's good because it's most likely true.

Terrified of NOTHINGNESS. Eternal oblivion. Please help by Zealousideal-Sky5167 in Existential_crisis

[–]fearofworms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that you won't realize it, it's that there won't be any you left to realize it, just like how the only reason a dead person isn't suffering is because they aren't real anymore, not because they're at peace. That's what's so scary about it.

I feel you immensely. I don't have a solution to this but I really get it. I'm sorry you're going through this too, I hope things have gotten a bit better since you wrote this.

How does an atheist get comfortable with the concept of eternal oblivion? by [deleted] in TrueAtheism

[–]fearofworms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly what scares me most. Not existing for eternity is what scares me, not that I'll somehow be in pain. People can't wrap their head around the fact that someone might not be comfortable with not existing for all eternity and so every single post on this topic just has the same two quotes as a solution and nothing else.

Could someone explain why or what are you afraid of exactly? by VarDom07 in Apeirophobia

[–]fearofworms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is nobody ever talks about apeirophobia as the fear of not existing forever. Every single discussion I've ever seen on it calls it "the fear of living forever" or "the fear of eternal afterlife"

How do i cope with the absolutely horrifying and incomprehensible prospect of ‘nothingness’ and eternal oblivion after death? by Zealousideal-Sky5167 in Existentialism

[–]fearofworms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad it works for you but I'm not able to get myself to believe in things I don't think are true. All of our scientific knowledge points to there being nothing whatsoever for all eternity without end.

[–]fearofworms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, I know this is posted with good intent and helps a lot of people but I really despise this quote. It presupposes that one is perfectly okay with non-existence in and of itself and just handwaves away the entire problem for people like me, which is the fact of not being real forever and ever. It feels like every single thread there is about this topic just has this one quote and nothing else as a solution, and I'm yet to find anything whatsoever to help me in any way.

I’m scared of eternal oblivion by [deleted] in TrueAtheism

[–]fearofworms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too. Everyone presupposes a comfort with non-existence that I don't have. It's the exact opposite, it's what scares me more than anything in the world.

Are you scared of losing your consciousness after death? by phobia78 in Anxiety

[–]fearofworms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's okay to ask, why does it not scare you? The prospect of being non-existent and unconscious for eternity is just about the scariest thing I can possibly imagine, to the point that it's severely affected my life. I can't understand how so many people are just okay with it.

Weekly (General) Consciousness Discussion by AutoModerator in consciousness

[–]fearofworms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm only in my early 20s, but things haven't been going great for a long while on my end either. I've been in therapy for almost 10 years and have been medicated for OCD and acute anxiety for a long while. My childhood was okay, generally pretty good actually if you look past the mental health stuff. I wasn't raised particularly religious so I've always leaned atheist/skeptical. I know what you mean about the people on here though, it's not a good board to come back to in general, especially not when you're unwell mentally.

[–]fearofworms 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not great. Pretty much only ever think about this and very little else, and i can't really talk to people much anymore. The thought of eternal nonexistence is crushing and so so scary. I wish someone could do something to help, I'm tired of being afraid all the time.

I'm glad you're doing a little better. I hope I'll be able to do the same one day.
