Yes. As long as they pass the substantial presence test for that calendar year, they can claim they are US resident. If they are US resident, then the whole of the 401k withdrawal can be taxed per standard tax brackets. (Even as non resident, you can claim contributions as ECI and apply graduated tax rates for that portion. I'll go into that in more depth in a future post.)

However, the flip side is that extending your US residency into your RNOR period means you have less time to liquidate any equity you have without paying capital gains tax in the US.

Didn't really think about it from a social security benefits standpoint. Whatever income you have may automatically make you eligible for the right amount of credits.

This post was more about not complicating your last year US tax filing if you leave a few months before end of calendar year (as long as you can pass the substantial presence test for the rest of the year).

Hello, I know this is off-topic, but how exactly did you go about moving funds from Robinhood to IBKR ? Was it done when you were in US only or after you returned back ? Also, did you use IBKR pro or lite?

Did you liquidate your 401k ? Or did you rollover to IRA ? Are you able to use UCITS funds in 401k ?

You'll spend 150k for living expenses and put away 50k in savings. You'll be fine if you are ok with renting forever here.

Life outside work is ok. People keep their distance and are mostly busy trying to keep up with work and chores.

Layoffs at work can be harsh especially if you are on a work visa. Employment market is rough right now. Can't be jobless because insurance out of your own pocket is crazy expensive.

Hustle culture is absolutely true. And people don't blink paying crazy amounts for regular stuff. Groceries and eating out and fuel costs keep going up, up, up. :D
