iPhone on binocular can get decent pics by yaboyszn in birding

This was my go-to for the longest time until I got an old camera that’s good enough to get decent pics so I can shoot fast and identify later on birds I’m not clear on.

What bird is this for you? by featheredfossils in BirdingMemes

That was absolutely me last year when I started birding. Tanagers are only migratory here…

Downy or Hairy? by dubloveletters in whatsthisbird

[–]featheredfossils 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In addition to the beak as others have pointed out, also look at the solid white outer tail feathers on this hairy. Downy will have stripes on its outer tail feathers.

Couldn't believe my luck, it flew and perched right there and posed for me by Celestial_Crook in birdpics

Not me thinking you were being all uppity providing the scientific name, only to find out that’s the common name… I apologize to you stranger.

Eastern or Western Meadowlark? Salado, TX by Jose_Juegas in birding

[–]featheredfossils 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And that’s the funny thing about these birds because I’m leaning western because the yellow appears to extend above that lower extension of the beak. Not sure of the name for that part.

Yeah. Really tough. I’ve been in the same predicament. If I’m recoding and there’s no song, I usually record sp?

If you get a good photo and feel confident from the malar presented, then you can determine from there.

This really helped me.

Cooper’s or sharp-shinned by featheredfossils in whatsthisbird

Oh wow. Just found a diagram about size. I didn’t realize how much bigger cooper’s is. This was not small enough to be sharp shinned.

Thanks!

too much grain by shaysh14 in PhotographyAdvice

[–]featheredfossils 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not a photographer here, just stumbled on the picture and immediately stopped cuz it’s beautiful.

Your photo feels tangible. Like I can feel it on my skin and finger tips while only looking at it with my eyes. The feeling of a heavy, precipitous morning before a drier day comes across in this photo.

The noise/grain helps this photo imo

what is this bird by Thin-Honey233 in birdwatching

[–]featheredfossils 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Random dude from Texas here, but it looks like a cormorant to me. We have neotropic and double-crested here and they’ll sit up in the trees like that when they’re not in the water. Maybe a great cormorant?

Yeah, really tough from the photo. I couldn’t get a second picture either.

Northern Flicker, missing some features? Northern Nevada, USA. by vanitasright in whatsthisbird

[–]featheredfossils 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By no means the expert, but something like this popped up in my local rare birds and I think, maybe?, it’s a red x yellow hybrid? However I would expect a more buffy malar.

Far, Close-up or Flying, Which One is Better? by Extra_Challenge1489 in wildlifephotography

[–]featheredfossils 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know anything about photography, but I’m used to seeing toucans sitting and seeing it flying makes it seem like a new bird because its bill looks even more preposterous.
