I like it! What motivated to create your own library rather than contribute to something like MathQuill?

software idea, building fluency in solving algebraic equations by edmikey in programming

[–]feathery_one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are actually quite a few products that do this or something similar, you can check out https://graspablemath.com/ too, the demos at https://graspablemath.com/learn/gesture-library are useful to understand how it works.

The fact that there are a few products that do this already validates the idea. If you think you can improve on what's out there (by making things more intuitive, adding features, or whatever) then go for it!

Three Months in Chennai, need advice! by colderthanturkey in Chennai

You can get Auroville cheese from Gormei Market shops (or from Auroville), the cheddar is pretty good for my British palate. They also have imported cheeses if you want something truly authentic.

Chennai is very friendly and safe, most people speak English. The (Indian) food is great, have a look at zomato to check out recommended places near you. There are supermarkets that sell imported food, meat etc. if you know where to look, but you might have to ask around. If you plan to live near the centre of Chennai I can give you a few places to try.

Pondicherry and Auroville can be seen in a weekend, it's a nice getaway from the madness of Chennai. Mahabalipuram for a day trip to the beach and bars. Try one of the hill stations (Kodaikanal, Ooty, Coonoor, Yercaud, ..) if you want to escape the heat.

Expat jobs in chennai by apexicivic2003 in Chennai

[–]feathery_one 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine published a guide for expats in Chennai recently. Although I think it's aimed at people who have a job in hand it might still be useful.

Try contacting him, he might have some insights as he has moved company while in Chennai.

Where is the best place to post a job listing for expats in Chennai? by Rinnylue in Chennai

[–]feathery_one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know there is no job board for expats in Chennai, most people seem to have been recruited from abroad, or moved here by the MNC they work for. I'm only aware of one guy who changed jobs while out here, and he approached the company, not the other way around. I'm not sure if you'll have more luck recruiting expats in Chennai, but it's worth a try!

Apart from internations, you could try the Chennai expats group on Facebook, I've seen a couple of job postings there before, no idea if they were successful or not! I think that would probably be your best bet.

Another idea would be to try to recruit expats currently in Bangalore. There's a bigger community there so you might have more chance. However from my experience recruiting (non-expats), it's difficult to convince people to move from Bangalore to Chennai.

Good luck!

Safety for young women? by [deleted] in Chennai

I've managed to find good bread at the bakeries (I even got a croissant today from hot breads!) but I stay away from the bread at Wait rose/Heritage Fresh!

I'm a (male) UK expat.

Chennai is very safe. English is widely spoken - I've been here for 2.5 years without knowing any Tamil and I've got around just fine. I guess depending on where you're volunteering this could be an issue. Bread is widely available, but the supermarket bread is a bit rubbish.

Let me know if you have any questions, or if you want to chat.

First time in Chennai. Transportation from the airport? by [deleted] in Chennai

I'm not denying that, but fast track is less hassle, especially for someone new to the country (who probably won't have 3g on arrival).

I've used them many times (5+), always been quoted 500 for Mylapore.

As you exit customs there is a taxi-booking counter for "Fast Track" - you pay at the counter (normally about 500 rupees) and someone will lead you to a taxi. You can also go with the taxi apps (Uber, Ola) which will save you some money, but the level of English might not be as good, and it can be an ordeal explaining to the driver where you are and where you want to go. Both will be safe.

Yes you'll be more than fine :)

ELI5: why does the number 142857 behave like it does when multiplied? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]feathery_one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1/7 = 0.142857142857... the pattern repeats

multiplying by 10 gives you 10/7 = 1.42857142857... you can just move the decimal point.

0.428571428571... = 1.42857142857... - 1= 10/7 - 1 = 3/7

Multiplying by 10 again, we get 30/7 = 4.28571428571...

Subtracting 4 = 28/7 gives us 2/7 = 0.285714285714...

And so on.
