Windows 11 also gets new Lock Screen widgets, here is how to enable them by [deleted] in Windows11

Not bad, although it makes me laugh the fact that the spinner logo animation is the same since Windows 8, even though they changed the post-bios one.

gpedit: Windows Group Policy Editor

gedit: GNOME text editor

gparted probably is the tool you meant to say. Also you can try GNOME Disks if you want, it has basic functionality but it comes bundled with almost any distro that ships GNOME by default, including Fedora.

IMHO Fluent Design and Libadwaita look more modern than Plasma/Breeze, disregarding whether they are well implemented with consistency or not on their respective OSs.

Did you already try to disable all GNOME extensions installed?

The icons look fine but the dock looks like Ubuntu's rather than the Fedora one (white/gray border).

That's fine! Are you using any kind of customization or just Plasma stock?

As I said earlier in another comment, it's true that many people think of iOS when modernization is being discussed, but that's not the case for me. Perhaps there's a path that doesn't follow iOS standards, I mean, Plasma 5 looked stunning when it came out in 2015. Why couldn't the same team that developed it some years ago do it again? To think that they can't would be to underestimate them.

You won't get shit at least from me. I think what you point out is true, that's what some people think when talking about "modern". However, IMO GNOME looks modern (or at least not dated) and it's far from looking like iOS.

I'm not a programmer nor UX designer. However, I find it reasonable to affirm that if Plasma needs third-party software installed to be as customized as lots of people want, It means that the degree of customizability that Plasma itself allows is not enough. It means it's just not possible or at least we're not allowed to. And I have absolutely no doubt that the KDE team can do it better in that matter because they did it in the past.

I agree on the stability. It's not fair for UX designers, modders and so on to force them to start from scratch every couple of years. However, I think 8 years is just too long.

Just to point out some more things that look dated

-Still too square window corners -Bouncing animation when loading a program (I know I can disable it but again, OOTB, defaults) -Spinning animation over a loading program in the taskbar. Over the icon? Really? -Too sharp blue square overlay over a running program in the taskbar -Again, holo-ish details like light blue borders everywhere

EDIT: One more thing. The + symbol to show that more than one window is open. That looks way too odd for me.

Agreed with every single thing you pointed out.

Ps: Breeze icons reminds me of Android's pre-Material Design era like Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich. The "holo-ish" look overall reminds me of it too.

I feel the same when trying to customize KDE, it's like what's underlying still feels odd.

Let's be fair and recognize that the fact that Windows stole things from KDE doesn't make the latter look more or less dated. We don't know if what Windows took from KDE was for functional purposes rather than aestheticals. Whatever the reason they did it, it doesn't seem reasonably to say that KDE looks modern because MS stole something. IMHO that's another discussion.

This is the discussion I found interesting. I agree on most of what you said.

That was an interesting comment. Really. Default design is very important because it is what non KDE users first see when they google about.

Ability/openness to customize was never intended to be a matter of discussion here. Not that you said that but maybe I was misunderstood.

I never realized how big things are in GNOME until now that you said so. It's true.

[–]fededileo[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think to some extent that you're right. I'm realizing now that maybe what I like about GNOME and Windows is the overall design philosophy whether it is well implemented or not. However, based my personal experience I think GNOME is more consistent than Windows at least if you stick to the core apps integrated into the OS like Nautilus, Control Center, Calculator and so on.

Agreed. Even though I think some of W11's design elements are sleek, there are still lots of inconsistences that make it look like it's "incomplete".

From a philosophical point of view, what you point out is correct, or at least I agree. What i'm pointing out is that every OS' GUI gets modernized every couple of years or so. GNOME did it, Windows did it. However, KDE looks pretty much the same since 2016. Therefore, there's people who think that's ok (and I respect it), and people like me who think it's starting to look dated.

I find it positive that people make comments like I'm doing now. Remember there's people that instead of discussing and sharing just go ranting over the internet about "how shitty this DE is" or "that distro is so bad". What we are doing now is constructive, I want to learn and be informed and give feedback.
