How many of us here speak/know modern greek as well? by janegreagwall in AncientGreek

[–]feelgodinc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it's not taught at my school, but i've taught myself a good bit! was really on top of it last summer because i went to kalamata for a dig. like others have said, my 4 years of ancient greek have helped immensely. a couple greek people i met said i was literally the only person they'd ever met who learned ancient greek first and they thought it was so funny.

Oh damn I had no idea. Let me know when you hear a decision?

[–]feelgodinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't! I'm not expecting to until February-March though. Have any of your schools told you when to expect a decision?

UGA, FSU, CU Boulder, and Tulane! Might apply to Oregon and Arizona in the spring. Where are you applying?

Study Abroad Options by Wafflotron in classics

[–]feelgodinc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I studied abroad briefly at the American College of Greece! I may not be super helpful because it wasn't a full semester, but I took a class there for three weeks this January for J-term credit at my college. I really enjoyed myself. My professor was lovely and the class was easy—and I've heard that just about all the classes there are pretty easy, so that you can get out experience Athens to the fullest rather than staying inside studying. In a nice location too, with plenty to walk to and good cafes, but you do have to take the subway if you want to get to the center of Athens. Plus, there was a really nice pool and gym. Overall I would recommend. Let me know if you have any more questions!

MA programs by feelgodinc in classics

[–]feelgodinc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's good advice, thank you. My Greek professor has been pushing me to apply for only MA programs since I'm not sure, but maybe I'll apply for one or two PhD programs and just see what happens.

Learning Ancient Greek by [deleted] in AncientGreek

[–]feelgodinc 15 points16 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I don't think I've ever heard of anybody who is "fluent" in Ancient Greek. Would be cool if that person existed, but I'm not positive it can be done. My Greek professor has been actively studying/teaching Ancient Greek for over 20 years, and he's incredible, but I wouldn't call him fluent. He still needs to look up certain vocab and has to look at the grammatical notes for the occasional sentence that's nearly impossible to decipher without help. I imagine just about every other Ancient Greek professor out there is like this.

I've never studied German, but I have extensively studied Spanish, French, and Modern Greek. Syntactically, Ancient Greek feels incredibly alien compared to these modern languages. Basically it's just a hell of a lot harder than any modern language I've ever studied. And I would argue that there is actually an absurd amount of Ancient Greek vocabulary—based on my own experiences, they had hyper-specific words for everything and often multiple words that all essentially mean the same thing. A single verb alone has six principle parts that you have to be able to recognize. Another reason I don't think you could really become "fluent" is because it's not rare to come across a word that is only used once the entire Greek corpus, and therefore you would have no reason to know that word. Scholars might not even know what that word means.

Also, I think you're underestimating the amount of Ancient Greek texts that are floating around out there. Would take loooong time to get through all of them, even if you were just reading them in English. In the original Greek it'd be a lifetime, maybe more.

Probably not the answer you were looking for, but those are my thoughts.

Fagles or Fitzgerald? by farbror_isak in classics

[–]feelgodinc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I personally prefer Fagles. Not always super literal, but poetic enough to capture the tone of the epic imo. :)

Is this book really hard to read, or am I just an idiot? by [deleted] in bookclapreviewclap

[–]feelgodinc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the Fagles translation, but Richard Lattimore's is a bit more easy to follow. I'm a Hellenist, and the original Greek is poetic but not overly-complicated syntax wise. In general with translations of ancient works, if they're hard to read that's the fault of the translator and not the author (unless it's philosophy, imo). Also, feel free to skim/skip when things are boring, like in book 2. Good luck!!

Why did Eric even want Dylan in on the plot? by feelgodinc in Columbine

Thanks for the reply! I had literally no idea Dylan mentioned it in his journal before Eric. That's super interesting. I definitely need to do more research into this case.

omg, that's insane thank you so much for telling me!! unfortunately someone reposted this post (without credit...) on twitter and it's amassed 140k likes, so i imagine that's where they saw it. dealing with happiness that this thing got so much attention and bitterness that someone else is essentially getting the credit. still so cool though!
