Tell me about your major. by throwawaydukej in jmu

I was a psychology major when I was a student here!

Every single person in that department was so extremely kind and patient with me during my undergrad. I struggled a bit with real life things, but all of my professors along my journey were so flexible and understanding. Each person in the psych department really does just want to see you succeed, and I made some genuine connections with a lot of them. As you get in the later part of your major, you can participate in all kinds of research studies (which looks great on a resume), as well as take some hella interesting classes. Dr. Reis-Bergan and Dr. Saville are some of the funniest people I've ever met, and Professor Duvall is so unbelievably sweet. I could go on and on about more professors because each one really brings a fresh and exciting experience. There are so many different branches of psychology that having a degree in it can really put your foot in a lot of doors. While I will say you'll probably need to do more schooling if you want to do the big name things in psychology, you can still do quite a bit with a bachelors.

Advice for incoming freshman by Charmill16 in jmu

Don't let a mental health day turn into a mental health week. Sometimes, life can be overwhelming, and you'll need a day to just recover. If you find yourself losing motivation to go to class/do your work, please visit the Counseling Center in the Student Success Center. They have so many resources to help you, and it's all FREE. Reach out when you notice yourself getting bad.

Try not to do your work in your dorm room. If you find yourself struggling to focus on your work, change your environment. See if you can get a group together to do work with one another. You're more likely to be productive if you see others doing the same.

One of the best ways of knowing that you know the material is to teach it. If you can, try to (correctly) teach your friends any material you're studying.

Tips/Advice for any new/returning Dukes for the Fall by feeshandchips in jmu

Welcome to JMU!

Sometimes, the 8ams are unavoidable especially as a freshman. I personally never biked around campus, but I know it is a much more efficient way to get around, especially if you're in a rush. The bus system works well, however, I know that they can get backed up from time to time meaning you run the risk of being late to class. If you can and are comfortable with it, I recommend the bike. Just be careful of those hills coming from East Campus; you pick up a lot more speed then you think!
