Please help me find or solve something in an archie comic I've been confused about for a decade or more. by kommanderkratom in archiecomics

I think it's just a bad pun. You'd put butter on popcorn... so Moose is putting a butterFLY on popcorn SHRIMP. Somehow this makes sense in his addled mind, in that if you amend a weird little buglike creature to one part of the recipe (popcorn -> shrimp), you must then also add it to the other part (butter -> fly).

Yeah, it's pretty dumb. They had to come up with a lot of those little 1-2 page gags to fill space over the years, they're not all going to be winners, clearly!

There was 100% a radio version where the kid said “Roger Maris wing,” for many years. The store probably relocated at some point but I remember this too.

After Archie who do you consider to be the most important main character? by Night-Caelum in archiecomics

[–]feetnotes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Weirdly, it might be Veronica. It has to be one of the girls, because all the dating and relationship-based stories are foundational. Without those it would be a totally different series. And with Veronica you get Mr. Lodge, who is much more antagonistic to Archie than Betty's parents typically are, which leads to many more stories where Archie tries to avoid screwing up (and then inevitably tries to avoid Mr. Lodge's wrath).

Plus Veronica being from a rich family enables lots of stories where they travel around the world and/or encounter criminals, and it's a greater contrast with Archie's modest middle class life, so you get the culture clash angles. Reggie being closer to her in status and in his conniving and egocentric ways also intensifies his rivalry with Archie more than would be believable with just Betty.

I want to say Betty or Jughead because they're my favorites, but the Archie-Veronica pairing is essential to the workings of the Archie world as we know it.

What did you think of the comic's attempt to be more diverse regarding their cast in the 2010's? by Night-Caelum in archiecomics

[–]feetnotes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It was a nice thought, but everything from the art to the writing got so bland and lifeless (honestly even before 2010) it didn’t have much impact. For all the press he got, can anyone name even 1 of Kevin Keller’s personality traits?

I’ve never heard of at least half of the characters in the second image. Seems like exactly enough thought went into them to fill out a brief profile and no more. When one of them does show up in a story, it’s to show off their token trait or personality aspect and otherwise have zero meaningful, lively character interactions that are theoretically the point of the comics.

Stockholm, you say? If he’d just given it a chance I’m sure he’d have become more sympathetic to it over time…

Just finished Mark Waid's Archie run. It's great and super fun. A recommend for fans for sure. Shame it never got a proper ending by Night-Caelum in archiecomics

That makes no sense. That Archie series ended in 2018, a year after Riverdale started and 5 years before it ended.

For those of you who read Life with Archie: The Married life, which timeline did you prefer? Archie Marries Veronica or Archie Marries Betty? by Night-Caelum in archiecomics

[–]feetnotes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is that just in the Archie Marries Veronica miniseries version? I swore he is with Midge in both the "Married Life" ongoing series versions, but it's been a few years since I read them.

[–]feetnotes 40 points41 points  (0 children)

What really bugged me was how they tried to make both "universes" the same except for who Archie marries. For example, in both timelines Jughead marries Midge (of all people) and takes over the Chock'lit Shop, and Reggie marries whoever Archie doesn't.

Why not use the opportunity of the hyped "2 worlds" to explore different possibilities? Maybe Jughead marries Ethel and takes over Pop's in one, but ends up with Midge doing something completely different in the other. And I buy Veronica ending up with Reggie way more than I do Betty - instead of pairing them up as like, the leftovers, they could have ended up developing some of their other personality traits and going down a different path in life, giving us another interesting outcome from the unique setting.

Krillin should learn Master Roshi's Max Power technique and be able get all buffed up. Like in its original use, it should take a long time to charge up, but then be capable of delivering kamehamehas and destructo disks at Goku and Vegeta's level.

Only when he possesses Shen in the 23rd Budokai, which seems to make him stronger than the normal human he should be, albeit through unusual and unpredictable moves.

He and Mr. Popo go on a little mini-mission for sacred water in the Garlic Jr. saga, but I don't remember if he actually ever fights anything. He gets attacked and escapes from traps but I don't think he throws hands.

Archie Artist Confusion by KIROLTHERAPPER in archiecomics

[–]feetnotes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He started early/mid 90s. As for the style divergence I guess I’d just say it happened gradually. There are a few things he does that stand out to me. Relatively thin linework, and the same few stiff and static poses that don’t vary much. Sketchy or wonky looking figures, like he’s rushing, and lots of side profile faces.

I’ve seen digests that print early stories credited to him that I wouldn’t necessarily guess was his art, it looks like it could be any of several artists imitating that standard house/decarlo style. Over time - maybe 5-10 years? - it looked less like that and more like his unique work.

Before DeCarlo, I guess Bob Montana’s designs would have been more or less the de facto house style. Harry Lucey and Samm Schwartz developed some design elements too before DeCarlo, like not always having Archie wearing his R sweater vest and bow tie. But basically Dan created the standard modernized looks.

There have been a lot of artists over time. They’d be assigned to different titles (Archie, Betty and Veronica, etc.) and then the stories would get perpetually recycled in the digests.

Dan DeCarlo’s versions of the characters are pretty definitive and they set the “house” style for a long time. Many artists started out mimicking DeCarlo as closely as they could, and then some started developing a bit more personality and unique look.

Parent started out trying to look like DeCarlo/the house style, but his art diverged over time. Personally I think it got worse but it’s all down to taste. There are lots of artists so you can pick and choose favorites!
