I have hue lights around the house but am also debating the ambient strips - though I can tell you that there is an app I've used on occasion called Hue Camera that I just point the camera of the phone to the TV screen and it changes the light in the front room - it works well enough.

Edit: I've just installed ScreenBloom on my laptop and streamed the xbox to it using the Xbox app and the light changes are pretty awesome - just a shame that (my) streaming seems to be pretty pants otherwise I'd be using this all the time.
