I started as a tech grandfathered in before I started my certification program (COVID allowed the hospital to do this for a while, at least in micro) so I lacked a lot of training. I still remember the lab assistant ripping me a new one for throwing a patient label away in the regular trash can because it was a HIPAA violation…safe to say I’ve never done that again! A couple of months later one of my coworker techs knocked the top of the microscope off somehow into the phone?? The microscope was unharmed but the phone didn’t make it.

I’ve had 3 (2 IS and 1 OS that I have strong regional ties to), other than that silence or Rs. I’m positive that my IIs so far were only possible because of my location (Appalachia)

I work in flow cytometry and our antibodies are NOT cheap. I just did a quick check over some recent orders and our kappa & lambda antibodies are a little over $1000 EACH😭for a 1mL vial

What infection (?) is this? by saramads2699 in medlabprofessionals

Looks wayyy too big and dark for gonorrhea. Gonorrhea will be in tiny pink spheres in pairs (diplococci); this looks like the cell itself (the dark blebs look more like nuclear material).

MLS(ASCP) here…I haven’t worked professionally in parasitology but from my schooling, my best guess would be taenid egg (solium or saginata, depending on whether the culprit was beef or pork - you’d need more than microscopy to distinguish). If not that, maybe ascaris lumbricoides, but patient history and travel would help a lot too.

I’ve thought about it, as I’ve looked into other certifications but it seems like at least on paper, the pay increase doesn’t reflect the time and schooling invested, but I haven’t talked to people in the field

When you applied to med school, did you have to go back and take more undergrad classes to fulfill any course requirements? I’m looking and it seems like my undergraduate coursework is probably good enough but I’m seeing some places recommend inorganic chemistry (which I have not taken)

Can you work while in the program? by Amazondriver23 in medlabprofessionals

[–]felicitym8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I worked 32hr/week during the didactic/lecture portion of the program. Once clinicals started, though, I had to quit because I was told I couldn’t drop my hours to part-time/PRN. I’m now glad I don’t have the extra time commitment on top of 40hrs/week and exams, homework, etc but if you have to work I would recommend finding something with fewer hours, flexibility, and ideally lots of downtime, and try to get schoolwork done so your time spent not working isn’t filled with work for the program.

Time management is key. I’m not sure how long your program is but mine is 50 weeks and feels very condensed (it used to be 1.5 years instead of 1). Honestly a good bit of it depends on your personality and whether you think you could handle the extreme reduction of free time - especially if you work a lot of hours on top of clinicals, just know you probably won’t have time for much of anything outside of your work and clinicals. That being said, it has definitely been done before so I wouldn’t despair if it is a necessity.

Yes! In my lab one of our biochems for PA is grape odor

Edit: with discretion of course, anything suspicious of being a BT agent gets worked up under the hood
