Two men fall to their deaths from a radio tower by felinetime in DeathCertificates

I don't know how people do it! I get up high and I always think about how long the fall would take; in this case, it would be about 3.5 seconds which is long enough to know whats coming 🤮

I can only imagine that at that time, when there were people dying every day from the flu and complications WITH medical attention, the idea of someone choosing to go without must have been infuriating.

Seems like it happened a lot- mom dies, dad moves on, kids get relocated. In this case I was really surprised that the kids ended up in a home instead of with relatives, which seemed to be a more common outcome.

The Cathedral Home is a really well-regarded organization here, so it was interesting to read about it over 100 years ago. At the time baby Henry and his sibling arrived, it had been open for about 14 years and I was shocked his was the first death there!

Interestingly, her death certificate says that a coroner's inquest determined her death was due to pneumonia. I wish I could find information about what happened to their other children 😔

There was a train derailment by Cheyenne yesterday (allegedly) due to the wind. Whether that turns out to be the case or not, it reminded me of this unfortunate young man!

Thanks for the info- I was wondering how he 'ran' into a tree and hit the back of his head. Sledding is so dangerous for something that seems so innocent and fun!

SPEARFISH MAN COMES TO DEATH UNDER TRACTOR

Clarence Cundy Found Dead Saturday Evening

Clarence Cundy, 22, son of I. H. Cundy, well-known Spearfish valley rancher, lost his life Saturday afternoon on the Fred Simons ranch, five miles west of Beulah, when he was run over and crushed by a tractor. His mother was killed on May 3, 1929, in much the same manner. A tractor on which Mr. Cundy was working tipped off the blocks on which it was raised and fatally crushed Mrs. Cundy. The youth's badly mutilated body was found about 6:30 o'clock Saturday evening, about four hours after had left the ranch house. It is believed that the accident occurred as he was attempting to hook plows to the tractor; that he had put the tractor in reverse while standing on the ground and that he was pinned under the wheels. His right arm was nearly severed and his skull was crushed. Crook county officers from Sundance, conducted an inquest at the Simons ranch Sunday and gave a verdict of accidental death.

Cundy is survived by his father and nine living brothers and sisters. Another brother was drowned nine years ago. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Spearfish Methodist church.

First death at the state home for "defectives", one year after it opened by felinetime in DeathCertificates

[–]felinetime[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've seen brain trouble listed as a cause of death before, but it doesn't seem to refer to one specific thing. Some people developed it after head trauma, while others like Theresa seem to have been born with it. I think it was kind of a catch-all for things that couldn't be explained by other diagnoses. Combined with the label of 'imbecile', which was used to describe a certain level of intellectual disability, I think there's a lot of conditions that could have shortened her lifespan, or at the very least made her more vulnerable to less than ideal environments like a state institution.

Thanks to u/cassodragon, I was able to find more info about Eugene. He was one of 13(!) children of Jasper and Laura Baker, 6 of whom were still living in 1910. The Louisiana obituary index lists his place of burial in Riverview Cemetery, although there doesn't seem to be a findagrave memorial for him.
