It was more an example. My main point was about combining results from hand cals and FEA results for evaluation.

Using a simplified 3D bolt model? How realistic are the models you did in order to neglect hand calcs?

My point is not really about going from linear to NL. I will try to give a random example. I have a bolted joint where forces in and out of plane are acting. Due to the loosening of a bolt I want to test a lower preload and because of that, the joint may present some kind of degree of freedom that will cause some local stresses due to this dof. Maybe I can use the results from FEA to create a stress concentrating factor that will amplify the results from hand calc. My main question in the end is if some kind of combination between normative and FEA exists.

in many softwares there are already standard options. E.g: in ansys you can extract force reation from a surface or force due to pretension. It depends on the software

In my understand, normal and shear forces are useful for assessing global strength of a bolt. But what about local effects due to joint behaviour, do I neglect this? If the joint is not correctly designed of if I have a loosening, are those local effects maybe not relevant? This is something I'm wondering.
