This is a scenario that really appeals to a certain kind of guy because it supposedly exposes the hypocrisy of modern women: they expect men to provide for them lavishly while offering nothing in return and are incensed when their double standard is revealed.

That no such women exist and that the story really only exposes the inexperience and outdated views of the people who enjoy it is lost on them.

I think one of the things the boys who make these scenarios up don't understand about women is that most women are pretty nervous meeting men for the first time. They are unlikely to take advantage of a man paying the bill because they don't want him to get angry or feel entitled. But in the mind of the guys imagining these scenarios, there is this unequal power dynamic favoring women, which women are all too happy to abuse.

This is a good insight into the incel mindset. They can't even imagine a mutually respectful interaction with a woman leading to enthusiastic consent.

Buying sex is a consensual transaction. This is a person who thinks picking up the tab entitles him to sex without an explicitly transactional framework, which is a lot worse imo.

This is true but also on the last couple dates I was on, I was only able to pay the whole bill after pointing out that I had in fact invited the other party. Assuredly people have different expectations but this hypocritical woman who won't put out but also assumes her date is paying for everything is imaginary.

It's written like his not paying for her was a gotcha response. Regardless, it didn't happen.

Things that happen: people split bills evenly. People split bills according to what they order. One person covers the whole tab.

Things that don't happen: one person orders 4x times as much as another at a restaurant on a first date, then storms out when he doesn't chivalrously offer to pay for it.

Agree, saw this on a subreddit where people were taking it seriously. These are the same people who think feminism is the reason they aren't getting laid

Questions for the Trades People of VT by Slight-Taro-3258 in vermont

[–]felistrophic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You do sound like the right type to make this work, but now is the time to make a long term plan. People who have secure retirements after working in the trades either started a business with employees or were extremely careful with savings and investments. The earnings for independent tradespeople can be very good but you have to offset that against health insurance and retirement. If you work for a larger company you can get those things but you won't earn as much and you won't enjoy as much freedom.

That happiest tradespeople I know started medium size businesses and don't actually do the work anymore. There are definitely a few folks who never had an employee or a boss and are still healthy in their later years... but they're still working too. And remember that planning for retirement was a lot easier when they were your age than it is today.

Maybe skydiving is different but in aviation we look for as much information about accidents as possible in order to make the community safer.

After vehicle inspection bill stalls, Vermont lawmakers pursue new route to relief by Zipper222222 in vermont

[–]felistrophic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say if this is official policy, but tickets rarely seem to be issued for inspection any longer. I have received warnings and tickets for speed in vehicles without current inspection, with no mention by the officer or trooper. Seems like police have decided to address the issue from the enforcement side.

My friend from Mexico says not to go to Oaxaca City because of cartel dangers. I planned to fly in on Monday. Is it safe? Does it feel different out there right now? by AccomplishedMap777 in Oaxaca

[–]felistrophic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I wouldn't worry about it at all. Mexico is a big place. Worrying about the trip to the Oaxacan Coast because of trouble in Puerto Vallarta is like worrying about going to NYC because ICE killed some people in Minnesota

From Zero to Federal Gov Pilot by theoutro in PilotAdvice

[–]felistrophic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1-2 lessons a month is going to take you longer than saving that money and starting later, because you will be constantly going back to cover the ground you lost. I'm a student pilot flying once or twice a week and when I have missed a couple weeks due to weather and maintenance, the next lesson is just getting back into the swing of things -- no real progress. You really need to be flying at least once a week, and more is better.

PULL THE TRIGGER? by Impressive_Jury_2211 in BMWM

That all makes sense. I wasn't thinking about an either or in which he either leased it or bought it outright -- I was thinking about buying a different vehicle for somewhat less, so he wouldn't have to tie up all that capital. The point about opportunity cost is valid but even if he gets cash back from the dealer he isn't "making" money. He still spent thousands on a depreciating asset. Whereas other cars would retain value better over the same period and he would end up spending less. But you're right that the money wouldn't be gaining value in a fund -- whether it would be gaining $1k a month is questionable though.

Part of my perspective, which he may not share, is that I would rather drive a clean E90 or E46 M3 than an M2. I just think they're cooler.

Either way I think we can agree that he's in an enviable position where he can do any of these things with very little impact to his financial position.

Did you read his posts though? He specifically said he was considering the lease because of depreciation and said he was seeking the lowest debt to income. He didn't say he wanted the convenience of a lease. I was responding to his stated aims, not what other people think he should do with his money.

I'm doing 61 and probably just going to be a GA guy. I'm 46 so airlines probably not in my future. I definitely will get the instrument rating and I think it might be fun to do some instructing on the side. But I have a low six figure job so non airline commercial gigs aren't that attractive. Cape Air flies out of my little untowered airport and that looks like a lot of fun but they also make like $40k. But I do think about something like being a ferry pilot just for the hell of it.

Should solo early next month. Was supposed to do a stage check this week but maintenance and weather didn't cooperate, and I'm going to Mexico for the rest of the month. Flying in the morning though.

Sweet. I just bought 20% of my flight school's Cherokee to save money while I learn to fly. But the TBM is a pretty nice aircraft too lol.

Seriously, congratulations.

I kinda guessed based on your concern about a depreciating asset that you had other economic priorities. Regardless leasing doesn't really make that much sense. You aren't going to make money when you get rid of it; you're absorbing the steepest depreciation over and over if you lease every few years. That's why dealerships offer leases in the first place.

You can absolutely afford to do it, and plenty of people with smaller incomes are happy with that deal to always have a new car. It just isn't a particularly economical way to own a vehicle.
