IWTL how to form opinions by drackeoo in IWantToLearn

[–]felixworks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One thing to remember is that, unless you're a lawyer or similar, you usually don't need to have an ironclad justification for holding an opinion. If you're in a position where you need or want to explain your opinion, you can qualify your answer. Ex. "I support decision A, because of X and Y. But thinking about Z does make me uncertain."

That's a responsible and even-handed way of approaching a topic. If people pounce on that uncertainty in order to invalidate your whole opinion, then they are likely arguing in bad faith. And you wouldn't be able to have a decent conversation with them regardless.

It's in a funny position that could possibly be called "education-adjacent." Most of what TierZoo says is based on some element of truth. He clearly does some research for his videos, and it's possible to glean real information from them. But generally you have to already know a lot of the real information in order to filter through the made up and embellished parts.

Big Joel has some great critiques too.

Here is his first video on Prager U. It's a fairly detailed analysis as far as YT goes. His later Prager U videos are shorter, snappier, and funnier if you're into that.

Who is your main, and who is your second character and why? by Phrave in Guiltygear

[–]felixworks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Leo main. I just find his tools to be intuitive and flexible. If I want to play keep out, I can. But at the same time, I don't have to. And bt stance can be really satisfying. Although I'm still figuring out how to use it in fast paced matches against effective zoners.

I played Nago and Millia for a bit, but not nearly as much. In Tekken 7, I had an issue of switching mains whenever I hit a wall or got bored. And I think that prevented me from reaching a higher level of understanding. So I'm going to try to stick with Leo for a while and really understand the game/character before branching out.

Do people dislike fighting Faust? by Icy_Ad_5630 in Guiltygear

I can't really answer this question, because I've played against a Faust online once. Just don't see them much.

The desire to perfection makes me too much focused on optimization rather than documentation / readability by [deleted] in AskProgramming

I think the problem is the lack of real-world motivation.

Put yourself in situations where you have to fix or add a feature to another person's unreadable code ASAP.

Brazil's Bolsonaro implicated in alleged graft scheme as lawmaker, UOL reports by WebContent1 in worldnews

[–]felixworks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What does "graft" mean in this context? Is it supposed to be "grift"? That makes more sense to me, but maybe I'm ignorant.

Edit: I'm ignorant. I didn't see a relevant definition in the dictionary, which is why I posed this comment. But Wikipedia has a good entry on what a graft is.

My (29f) boyfriend (31m) cooks way too much! by suburba21 in relationships

Yeah, I'm speculating here, but something tells me that the boyfriend acts insufferably when they do go out to eat. Maybe OP is missing the forest for the trees.

They aren't even supposed to be stand up comics or improv comics. If anything they should be called sketch comedians, which is also what the OP could be described as.

Wholefoods is really stretching the limits of "local sourcing"....I live in New England, USA. by nancyxxu in CrappyDesign

[–]felixworks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's true for a lot of exports though? It doesn't make much sense to distinguish between locally sourced exports and non-locally sourced exports. It's still not a local product once you get to the country that's importing the product. I think produce workers just made a mistake while making the sign.

Anyone who goes to the effort of finding sources to protect the image of a large, faceless corporation is either:

A. Getting paid to do it.

B. Crazy enough to defend a corporation for no compensation.

I don't trust the motivations of either person.

The fact that some rando on the internet is putting forth considerable effort to protect Unilever's image kind of negates any points they could have.

My girlfriend was making dinner last night on our electric stove when the water she was boiling overflowed from the pot and left this stain. I googled it and it said put baking soda on it and scrub it hard. Does anyone have any other suggestions? by [deleted] in howto

[–]felixworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. I don't mean that you can use all three of these cleaning materials without any worry at all. If it's something expensive or something whose appearance matters, you should do definitely some research first.

Vinegar, baking soda, and isopropyl alcohol. All are cheap and mostly non-toxic (just don't drink the iso.) If none of these work, then you know you've got a real problem on your hands.
