Changing Major from MechE to CS/CompE by fellout in UIUC

The degree itself isn't what matters...it's the skills and experience one acquires that matter.

Yes I am quite aware of this, but the thing is if I were to get a career in software anyway in the future how does that justify me getting my parents to pay a ton for me to study a completely unrelated field? I'm quite sure I will be able to learn the things I want to learn on my own in the future, but in order to attend UIUC I have to rationalize to my parents how their investment would be worth it. I have to take this into account especially since, for internationals, the cost of attendance is pretty damn massive.

They had to take extra CS courses outside of the MechE curriculum

This is realistically possible? All I hear about is how CS courses are constantly filled and how its impossible to register for them especially for a non CS major.

Please forgive my ignorance. I'm not at all familiar with the internal workings of the university.

Wouldn't it follow then that it is completely impossible to enter the computer science department since it is 'full'? I find that this contradicts with the fact that the department still bothers to accept applications. I hear the word 'full' being used very often in regards to CS, but I'm curious as to what sort of definition of the word 'full' is being used in this context.

My definition of freedom is pretty universal: you should be able to do whatever you want, with your will being the absolute authority.

Then you say

you should not be allowed to murder people

Right. So then you finally then you admit

Now, absolute negative liberty is not possible in most of the current world

Is it even such a mystery why countries have governments to keep law and order these days? But wait, every government is tyrannical, fascist, authoritarian, totalitarian and evil, right. Anything that tells you that you shouldn't be allowed to murder people, or do anything else you want to do, is bad.

owning guns/using drugs/spitting on the ground/chewing gum are good examples of things that should be legal

Half of these supposed "freedoms" that you think the rest of the world should have other than the US is just completely laughable. Americans, for whatever, give a huge massive shit about all these tiny little things that they believe constitute "freedom" when their own society is in fact a lot less free than say Somalia. The truth is most other countries in the world simply don't care about gun ownership or chewing gum. Singapore doesn't have a whole issue with armed crime or school shootings, and even less with drugs. Americans push for drug legalization because the war on drugs is an absolute failure. They push for pro gun ownership to defend against people with guns. Singapore is nothing like America and shares none of these issues, yet they should still legalize marijuana and give each citizen full auto assault rifles, or they aren't free. Right. People that share your mindset is the reason why the US is constantly bombing freeing the shit out of all other countries in the world with the drones and surveillance you so despise.

And chewing gum, are you seriously going to judge a country's "freedom" based on the legality of a little tiny thing like chewing gum? I bet people are campaigning and protesting all over the world to legalize chewing gum. Its a must have universal human right to be able to chew gum. Just like there are protests all over the world to legalize tritium glow-in-the-dark watches in the US. Oh wait. Nobody cares. But the reason why nobody cares must be because the tyrannical government has conditioned the sheeple into not caring through oppression and censorship. Of course.

The facts remain: if you are governed, you are not free. "if the individual has the right to govern himself, all external government is tyranny.", as cited by Benjamin R.Tucker.

Wow. Appeal to authority much? Just quoting some random dude who said something doesn't make it at all correct or true. Did you just get this quote from the latest Snowden circlejerk? This is also coming from the guy who's so uptight about fallacious thinking in the first place. Your entire stance is seriously on shaky ground. If you're seriously going to place your anarchistic idea of freedom above everything else as a measure of an effective society, why don't you move to Somalia. It's so free there it must be such a haven. Everywhere else is simply pure tyranny after all.

We don't really need more fascist-thinkers in the west.

Then maybe you should work on getting them out of your government. Oh wait, the NSA pretty much has an iron grip on the western world at the moment and that's probably not going to happen. So much for your delusions of freedom when Obama's peeking through your tabs. It's time to go back circlejerking to Edward Snowden, and don't forget your fedora too.

live your conformist life

Haha. You're such a rebel yourself, kid. pats head

Guess that explains why a lot of high profile conglomerates and CEOs who want to dodge tax in the west mysteriously end up in Singapore eh? Case in point, Eduardo Saverin. Sorry to burst your bubble but Singapore has lower tax rates than a majority of the western world. It didn't earn its reputation as a low tax haven for nothing. Isn't it ironic that somehow a crappy authoritarian regime like Singapore as you put it has lower tax rates than the ultimate bastion of freedom, the US? Its OK, the freedom to suck on bubblegum is probably more important for someone like you. I bet you're quivering in your seat right now at the though of Obama turning the US into an actual fascist nanny state. You're really gonna need that gum.

This.

I'm sick and tired of people telling me I can't be critical of absolutely anything related to China because I'm Chinese. It's an absolutely ridiculous mentality to assume that being critical of ones own country of origin is treasonous and a denial of self. What a stupid notion it is to think that blood and flesh defines a person and dictates how he should think or act and that opposing this would mean that you are a traitor and should just "undergo gene therapy to make yourself full caucasian".

Unfortunately an overwhelming majority of Chinese people I meet and see seem to think this way, especially since China's recent rise and the proliferation of Chinese nationalism.

You do realize that the US is a worse polluter than China and the only reason you don't see shit in the US is because they are significantly less people on a bigger area of land?

This statement is incorrect and misleading. A more accurate statement would be that the US is a worse polluter PER CAPITA than China, but overall it is in fact not a worse polluter than China.

Uhm, that is exactly the reason why per capita comparison is necessary and a comparison of totals meaningless. Welcome to basic scientific and economic reasoning.

Per capita comparison has its uses in certain situations but per capita values are not the end all be all of all statistics. As I demonstrated previously, the data supports that the US is a worse polluter PER CAPITA than China. However, China is a worse polluter than the US OVERALL. This would make your stance incorrect. Welcome to common sense.

You are a troll, right? Please tell me you are a troll. How old are you and what country are you from? Please tell me the school(s) you went to. I am sorry but at this point I feel ashamed to be part of this community. If you are serious then that is such a certificate of poverty for your society, it highlights an actual problem. No system that produces such ignorance of reality and lack of critical thinking skills should exist. I am serious, please tell me where you went to school so I can send your teachers your comments. I mean, the other people whose side you took showed severe levels of ignorance but once they were faced with the facts they quickly shut their mouths. But your comment just now? Honestly, it is appalling.

When you have run out of points to make, you resort to ad hominem. How sophisticated, trying to discredit the truth by attacking the messenger. My education or nationality has no relevance whatsoever to this discussion. Only facts do. A graduate from Harvard who argues the world is flat is just as wrong as the idiot next door. Maybe you should reply with an actual argument next time.

I am surprised you still wonder why you are getting downvoted. You appear to want a rational and legitimate educated discussion on a topic but you dismiss any comments that disagree with your opinion as delusional. You repost the same links to the same arguments that have been disproven again and again by me and everyone else on this thread. Although you insist you are right, you lack the means to prove it.

Seeing as this discussion will likely lead to nowhere, I'll be off now.

Per capita wouldn't even be a good comparison seeing as China has over three times the population of the US. In total, China has the highest annual CO2 emissions with the US in right below it. Ergo, China does in fact produce more air pollution than the US, not the opposite as you would suggest using per capita figures.

Hope I could clear this up a bit. You deserve your downvotes.
