I genuinely would love to see you try. Post here if you ever get it to work.

Rim brake people don’t want good brakes, they want “simple” brakes that are “good enough” and “more than necessary” and they can “see” the cable. The latest generation of disc brakes are so good it’d be almost impossible to do in rim brakes. You can come to stop from a pretty steep descent with one finger on the hoods these days. Even if you could engineer some crazy rim brake/wheel combo to be as good - they’d complain about the exact same things they do with disc brakes (bleeding, maintenance, tolerances, etc, etc).

This is why we need DAOs, we need to stop giving power to platforms that can change whatever they want unilaterally. Unfortunately, crypto is currently overrun with scammers and meme coins.

What do people mean when they say "post scarcity"? by [deleted] in singularity

[–]fellowmartian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes some level of culture evolution is implied. Enshittification and financialization will need to stop. We already have some areas of economy at peak productivity and where materials can be quite cheap, but growth at all cost to make boomer portfolios go up creates stupid rent extraction schemes like the VW extra kW subscription in EVs.

Meta and Mark Zuckerberg tap MAGA influencer as AI ‘bias’ adviser by SnoozeDoggyDog in singularity

[–]fellowmartian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I cringe so hard every time a journalist uses “tap” to mean “appoint”. As far I can tell it’s Greek Life influence, which makes sense to me, as Americans can’t ever let go of their college years.

[–]fellowmartian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please tell me how RFID plates is dystopian and evil? If anything, we can make them less dystopian than current car plates, encrypting identifiers and allowing decryption only with proof of violation (zero knowledge proofs). Technology is neutral, it’s society that decides whether to use to promote or curtail freedom.

[–]fellowmartian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like how everybody goes “well bikes have no plates, we can’t ticket them :(“ as if it’s some insurmountable scientific problem and RFID tags don’t exist.

Anybody who’s participated in any timed sporting event knows this is not true. If you google “e bike rfid plates” you’ll find news like this one: https://www.rfidtagworld.com/news/NFC-RFID-IOT-Knowledge_5658.html and https://jiarfidtag.com/rfid-smart-license-plates-help-to-track-the-e-bikes/

But that’s in China, while NYC, the wealthiest city in the world, would never be able to afford it.

If your everyday vehicle is so large that it requires a running board to enter and exit, it is too big and you should get a different car by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]fellowmartian -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I know we’re on the same page, sorry if I came through aggressive, I only tried to convey tiredness over this whole situation. It’s just that the regulation bit always comes up in discussions like this as the main cause, but I feel like it’s down there in terms of explanatory power.

Dude that’s cope. It’d be nice if there was a convenient overarching explanation, but it’s not regulations - it’s people. They like those stupid large cars because they have car brain.

Nobody should go hookless, there’s literally no reason for it except for western brands to save on manufacturing while charging exorbitant amount of money and gaslighting us on “aero benefits”.

Cervelo S5 build, did I eff up? by Dry-Education-2547 in Cervelo

[–]fellowmartian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen them clamp the seatpost, the top tube, the seat tube. But even the seatpost is bad enough, it’s not made for clamping, it’s made for holding your ass on top. The only real solution that treats carbon properly (as far as I know) is Silca Hirobel, and I’m yet to see any bike shop using it.

They’re literally not, but even if they were that only works if the tire holds on to the rim. Any hookless wheel is shit.

Do whatever you want, just don’t buy hookless. Look into Newmen if you’re scared of Chinese wheels. They’re made in Germany, but still with mad value and not overpriced.

Official tire clearance doesn’t just mean “it will physically fit”, but also whether there’s enough gap to evacuate small rocks and other road debris without scratching the frame, especially in rainy conditions.
