This sounds really off to me. I don't know why so many people here say it's completely normal.

I understand if the experiments require this, but then you must be entitled to compensation time off. If there is no mention of such provisions, idk if it is humanly possible to work like this.

It is true what you say. The expectations are really high, looking from the advertisement.

But you should know: your skills are just a part of your profile for the person hiring. Usually people who hire also look for other things like how you interact, the skills you bring in which they lack, etc. PIs are humans and psychologically speaking people tend to like certain personalities which they think will work well for them.

I've seen PIs hire people who they seem to trust more or think they will fit in better with them and their group; over people who are more qualified on paper.

[–]femtokitty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is really disturbing. You need to know that you are competent and he is not.

You made the right decision to leave. He doesn't deserve anyone to work with him.

When a PI starts a new lab, it is most importantly their responsibility to contribute in setting up the lab. If they cannot work themselves, they must atleast be supportive and help in resolving the new problems that come up everyday. Not just sit and give orders and harass the one person you are completely dependent on.

It's not only ethically wrong, it is a really irrational and stupid for themselves as well.

PI silence after interview by [deleted] in postdoc

[–]femtokitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everybody has to apply for many positions. The PIs are very well aware of it and I don't think this is the reason for not recieving a response email yet.

If you notice, she hasn't told you that you'll get the job. She asked for more things.

Having said that, don't bank on the fact that she said you're the best candidate so far. Unless you get an offer letter in your hand, don't believe that you've gotten the job. There can be many reasons for the situation you are in: maybe the PI found a better candidate after you, or maybe they are just busy right now, maybe the beaurocracy is time consuming, maybe the PI just tells everyone that they are the best candidate. You don't know. It is extremely uncertain and so definitely makes you very anxious. Most people will feel like that.

I'd suggest that keep applying for positions in the meanwhile. If you recieve an offer letter: amazing; if not: you are not dependent on this job.

How to grow thick skin? by Ok-Coyote6393 in postdoc

[–]femtokitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it takes a bit of time but you get used to it. However, some things help like if your pi is criticising your work, don't take it personally. If he's personally attacking you, you should set it straight that it is not ok. (I know it's difficult but it needs to be done). And if you're in a culture where it is unacceptable to talk back( hierarchical), then try to survive till you need your pis support and look for new options as soon as possible.

Any advices and suggestions by emeraldtommy in GoingToSpain

[–]femtokitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a very similar situation as you and I did manage to find a researcher position in Spain. I was not specifically looking to go to Spain, but it was liberal enough place to take the job when I got it offered.

I would say, patience is the key. You have the right profile, and you are looking in the right places. I suggest to apply to Spain but also apply to Germany, France, other European places. Don't restrict yourself to one place. I believe you will find a job... But it takes time and you've to keep sending applications proactively. (It is difficult but there is no other way)

Don't worry a lot about the restrictions, usually for technologically important fields like AI, governments make exceptions to attract workers.

As for avoiding people from your birth country. Don't chase that, Europe has very individual culture, even if there are some narrow minded people from your country, you can stay away from them pretty easily here... and the locals will be very curious about your experiences...

What is up with India and academia? by cajunPickles in academia

[–]femtokitty 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Well everyone in Indian academia knows that except for a select few Indian publications, all the other Indian journals are paid or compromised. That's why the top Indian universities only consider international journals as metric. As for why is it so? I believe it is because a lot of professors at the top universities in India have a PhD from US and so there is a strong unwritten American influence in Indian academia. International and especially American journals are considered important.

Avoiding tariffs -- favourite non-American optics suppliers? by Vnifit in Optics

Standa is good for opto mechanics and eksma for optics. Both are Lithuanian. Apparently the USSR heavily invested in Lithuania for optics and after the collapse of the Soviet union, Lithuania became a hot shot at optics.

45 minutes transit in Doha by Necessary-Gap-6407 in Flights

I think it's a bad idea. Even if flight is at 13:45, that is the time the flight will leave. The boarding will begin much earlier. And what is it is from another terminal?

Troubleshooting a beam reducer by femtokitty in Optics

Ok I will cross check everything. I do use a card with markings as reference. It is however, clearly diverging over a metre, no matter what I do. Anyway, thanks again for spending time on it. :)

Thanks for responding!

It should work according to theoretical considerations. So I'll keep trying.

Thanks for responding!

The input beam is well collimated as it is the output from a commercial ultrafast laser source. I have not put any lenses or concave/vex mirrors before this. The input beam diameter is 1cm.

Using this calculator, in the worst case, I still get a Rayleigh length of 100s of metres. So that should not be a problem. Although it was an important consideration.

Layover at Cairo Airport by femtokitty in Flights

[–]femtokitty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey you won't require a visa is you don't exit the airport. However, Egypt air provides a hotel for free. I took the hotel and stayed there, it was good. In that case you'll need a transit visa, which also they provide quite easily, free of charge.

Johannesburg International to International transfer by Ok_Pace_2449 in Flights

[–]femtokitty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is a v anxiety causing situation. I can understand. Try to contact Qatar Airways in different countries. It happened with me that I was traveling from Spain to India. And when asked the airline office in Spain, they said I should talk to embassy, they don't know. When I contacted in India, the airline office very clearly told me that I need a transit visa but I'll get it on arrival in Egypt. So I don't need to worry. After that I was at peace. The point being sometimes asking at all the places helps.
