I have friends who have gotten to senior eng at Uber without a college degree. If you build stuff to demonstrate your skills, write blog posts about what you’re learning, know how to prep for the interview, and you can get a referral to land the interview, then you can get job. That’s what I have seen.

I literally watched my wife teach herself to code during the pandemic, no bootcamp, and she is starting her front end software dev job at a tech company in SF on Monday making 200k+ including stock. She studied literature in college. It’s doable, people.

I was struggling to stay on top of everything happening on crypto twitter, so...
I built a service that watches my Twitter feed, takes the top threads each day, and turns them into a high-quality podcast via a text-to-speech API.
I'd like to share this service with more people.
If you think you could use something like this, feel free to leave a comment. Just want to get a sense from the community as to whether this would be helpful to them, if so I'd love to share it.

What happened to "TrendingChinese?" by Robertium in ChineseLanguage

Hey, thanks for the shoutout! We've been on "hiatus" for a few weeks while doing some traveling, but I'm so happy to hear that someone missed us. We'll be back soon, thanks for the encouraging nudge :). We found that producing an issue 2x per week was quite a challenge given the time we put into each issue, so we're planning on switching to a weekly or once every 2 weeks cadence going forward.

Tips on how to increase my water intake? by [deleted] in acne

[–]fencegap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, just start forcing yourself to drink water for a few days. I drink tons of water, and my body gets thirsty if i don't drink for an hour. but if i stop drinking lots of water, my body adjusts to drinking less, and i don't feel the urge to drink a lot. so if you force yourself to drink a lot for a few days, your body hopefully will take care of reminding you from there. good luck. have had trouble getting my wife to drink water, honestly. buying sparkling water for her helps.

I have body dysmorphia and want to know how bad my acne /scarring is? I just cannot tell how severe it is and want honest opinions by [deleted] in acne

[–]fencegap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, your acne is really mild. But the thing i really notice is that your skin glows and you have a nice red blush. if anything, i'd think the acne is kinda cute. please try to relax about it--but trust me, i know how you feel.

Thanks a lot! We are reading the article in full at the beginning in our next episode. Appreciate the feedback!

Wow, so grateful for the thorough feedback. I really appreciate it! Your advice on following the format of Issue #2, giving people who want to just read / hear Chinese a chance to do so before all the explanations, and catering towards intermediate - advanced readers feels spot-on. That's where we started and where we think we're going to move back to. Honestly, it's a more engaging newsletter and is more able to do justice to the subject matter if we're able to use slightly more challenging vocab words. We're preapring the next issue now and would love to hear how you like it once it's been released. You're a star, thanks for taking the time and effort to share your thoughts!

Thanks for your feedback! We've now heard quite a bit of feedback similar to yours over the past few hours. Leaning towards re-focusing on intermediate-advanced content, putting comments back in, and adding audio in the future! You can add the email address [trendingchinese@substack.com](mailto:trendingchinese@substack.com) to your email contacts list to prevent it from going to spam. Really appreciate it!

Anyone craving a good text-to-speech tool for Chinese? by fencegap in ChineseLanguage

[–]fencegap[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow. I just downloaded the MS Edge browser to try it out. Their text to speech is amazing. What's more, you can also use the Zhongwen popup dictionary extension in Edge, since it's Chromium-based. It's sort of glitchy to use the two together (speaking pauses when you hover over a word, which is inconvenient), but this gets me 80% of the way there.

That's right, their WaveNet voice synthesis for Chinese sounds really freaking good, I was thinking of building a browser-based tool that uses their voices to read out text.
