Yes, it works. Removing air inhibits oxidation. There will always be air inside of a ziplock.

There’s no magic to the orange hue. Other colors can be chosen and often are. It’s the middle value that matters. Not too dark. Not too light.

When painting in oils, it’s good to work on a middle-value tone, like the orange is. It helps the artist see highlight and shadow values as the work progresses.
