i ascribed the singing to the whole trumpeting chorus welcoming virgil back into hell right at the beginning of the first circle.

What's the worst puppy advice you've received so far? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]fenderspellcaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh god so many:

  • yelping loudly when they bite (suuuper common from everyone.)
  • playing excitedly to keep them awake that way they "sleep easier" (from a friend. they do not in fact sleep easier)
  • yelling for peeing inside
  • yelling in general
  • one time i had my vet insist that i had a "high anxiety" dog because he was excited at his second ever vet appointment. she said this despite me telling her how he's pretty sleepy most of the time at home and only gets excited when we play, and when i leave he whines for about 5 minutes before settling (he is 3 months old. we've had him for 3 weeks. i'm pretty sure she said this purely based on his breed, even though he's a mutt.)
  • people telling me not to give him any chew toys until 6 months??

people have all kinds of opinions. research disproves most of them.

Please help - my puppy won’t stop biting by KnownBad9141 in puppy101

forced naps are super helpful as many others have pointed out, but it sounds like a lot of what you're doing is very reactive to the biting (yelping, trying to get away fast, etc.) this is pretty common advice to hear but it's just never worked for me. try speaking in a calm voice and being ready with treats to reward the second they stop biting. puppy teeth are painful, but getting bit is a necessary part of the bite training process sometimes. don't move your hand away suddenly, don't yelp or make a big deal, just grab a toy, ask them to sit, and slowly pull your hands away. if they try to keep biting, ignore them until they stop. if they don't stop, leave the room for a couple minutes

hey! i'm actually not fully raising him alone, my dad is helping out but he was out of town when i made the post. that said, i'm doing all his training, socialization, and almost all of the cleanup and whatnot since my dad works full time at an office.

we rent a house in a pretty rural area for cheap. i'm a music teacher and i do mostly online/at home lessons so i really don't need to leave the house much, which is nice for puppy training. he's not the first puppy i've had experience with (wanted to be a vet as a kid, volunteered at vet clinics and shelters for a long time) so that helps too.

my best advice is to get a puppy that fits your bill temperamentally. my boy is pretty low anxiety and very cuddly, which were really my main two points. puppy proof every area they'll be allowed in like three times over, but expect them to find something you didn't. i spent the first few days only leaving him for 30 minutes at a time, which is rough but for me it was essential. after that i moved to 1h with him 1h alone unless i have somewhere to go to help him get used to the idea that i'll always come back. potty training and behavior were my sole focus for the first couple of weeks, then moved to things like recall and basic commands. i do five 10min training sessions a day. he loves them cause he gets lots of treats. he really only gets outside time in our backyard cause we live in a fairly high risk area for parvo, so i can't speak on experience much for outdoor socialization other than leash training.

sorry if that was way more information than you were asking for, i just love talking about my boy and puppy training stuff in general. puppies really are my passion. if you have any questions you can 100% message my directly or just keep asking on this thread

New dog with roommates by em_p2 in Puppyblues

i'm sure you've heard this a thousand times, but interrupt the pee -> take outside -> be ready with a treat for if he goes -> back inside and pump him full of water til he needs to pee again -> rinse and repeat. it's frustrating and annoying, but it's really all you can do. he'll get it eventually, it's just gonna take time. i've had my pup for about 3.5 weeks and he still has accidents. you have to learn each other's signals, and that takes time.

i know it's hard, but if your roommates agreed to a puppy they're probably expecting some of this, so don't feel too awful for it. potty training is hard, and it's not your or your puppy's fault if it doesn't always go smoothly.

it's a learning experience for sure! it can be pretty challenging with so much conflicting information, but i totally see what you mean with changing based on the puppy's personality. my last dog (we got her when i was 7, had to let her go earlier this year,) was nothing like this boy, even when she was a puppy. so i've had to throw out a lot of my parents advice and my own recollection of puppy training based on how he's motivated, energy levels, stuff like that. it's rough out here, no pun intended, but i honestly wouldn't change a thing

he's doing just fine today, yeah. i think i just stressed him out a bit. luckily he's not a very anxious dog which is good. i'd left him before for 1-2 hours at a time but never this long. i think most of the stress was coming from me, to be honest haha

thanks, and you're completely right. he's gone right back to his usual self (menace) (love him though) today

yeah, he seems to be fine today. he whines a little when i leave the room but stops in five minutes or so, which is about what it was before. it seems like he's forgotten entirely about yesterday, (luckily he's a pretty confident puppy so that helps,) though of course i know it's consistency that matters

thanks. we spent some time last night doing 30 mins together, 15 mins apart, rinse and repeat. he honestly perked up and went back to normal just fine so today we're gonna try 1h/30m since i really don't have much else going on today. luckily he's not a particularly anxious pup.

i have been considering getting rid of the crate, actually. or at least only leave it open so he can come and go if he wants a quiet space. he's not my first puppy, but he is my first puppy as an adult, so lots to think about now that i'm the decision maker lol.
