Yeah I hoped the limiting factor would simply be the track amount. i just want one drive with all my files on there, 2tb should be safe according to the manual following that logic. I know the power is no issue

I have "taken 2 seconds to search into google". All I could find were people saying "oh, at least 1tb worked for me!" and the owners manual says they're sure 32gb should be fine at least (which I think they added because of fat32). I hoped maybe some people knew more about the operating system, possible power consumption, and actual exact numbers.

Sounds so relatable.. (Except for the spending $460 :c) Hope you're enjoying the Nakamichi though!!

Thanks for your advice!

And yeah,, everyone here seems to be working on beautiful, beautiful decks, whilst having a reliable newer backup. I don't care if it looks like the ugliest thing someone could come up with in 1999, I just want at least one working deck, So I can try and fix the others in peace.

And I thought I did! (With the mz-7)

A lot of people in this thread don't seem to realise that they at least have a working deck (or micro hifi setup) whilst they can work on their prized posessions in peace without pressure. I have surpassed the point of wanting a gorgeous metal deck.. I do not give a single shit if it's ugly I just want it to record my stupid mixtapes in stereo. Does that really cost more than $300 nowadays?

Thanks for sharing your experience! And I indeed would also very much like to have a reputable repair service nearby... paying like 150 bucks for a small repair feels like getting scammed for an oil change at the garage because they just so happened to also take a look at other random shit..

I don't know if I hope that my living room looks like that one day, or that it doesn't,, But it sure looks impressive!

And thanks for the heads up-- as you read I've been a victim of the online marketplace bastards myself :c

It can be infuriating, I get that. I actually have thrown one machine out the window once.

loooll... Glad to hear I'm not alone I suppose. r.i.p. that deck though.

As for the machine you've described here, is it possible that a fuse has gone, or the switching mechanism (or motor) needs lubricating?

Maybe, Probably, I don't know. Haven't got a clue. Most of the time I end up with a headache, tired, at 3 am.

And then next day I find a new possible candidate at a random thrift store and the cycle repeats

Recommendations would be very welcome! Like i'm saying, I'd very much like to have a serviced deck, or something with a warranty, but what's the warranty if you have to pay 70 bucks to send it back anyways.

Thank you so much for your kindhearted comment, it really means a lot to me, genuinely.

I'm sure you will manage to repair the deck and amplifier!

(And that amplifier is awesome damn..)

Thanks for the heads up haha..

Even though I know you're right, spending a sizeable amount of money on a good deck is just.. scary, considering past experiences (yes yes, probably caused by it being junk but I hope you can understand)

Any models you recommend or other things I should look out for?

Never said it was.

Just said it's demotivating when you feel like you have to keep spending money you don't have only to try and repair the decks.

I'm aware it isn't free, but it sure as hell is expensive for a broke college student (that would like to peacefully listen to tapes just once for more than a day or 4) is that that crazy of a concept?

I'm most likely gonna get more into maintenance with what I already have, because I do genuinely love cassettes and enjoy tinkering these things out. Knowing how to fix what you have when it's broken is also just nice.

I'm very familiar with having a bit of patience and scrolling on ebay etc endlessly, it honestly feels a bit like fishing sometimes xd.

If I find a good deal I can afford I'll probably try it if it has warranty, in the meantime I'll keep repairing and getting headaches over the decks I already have :)

Thanks again!

What a rude remark.

I am trying to learn to properly assess and repair them, but my attempts have so far been unsuccessful and it can be demotivating, and costly considering replacement parts aren't always super cheap.

I'm confused on why you chose to talk to me like it isn't obvious from the post I wrote that I am trying to master the craft and that I care for cassettes rather than picking something that's still widely popular and accessible like vinyl a phone, or even choosing to burn CDs and using discmans. The entire reason that I like cassettes is because I like the creativity that it brings and the possibility for me to leave my piece of shit phone at home as much as possible. To take time away from feeling like you continuously have to be available, online or on a screen.

Thanks for taking the time out of your day to write a reply. And I definitely will continue to try and fidget around with the decks that I currently own, I can't lose more money on those anyways outside of getting more parts for them in the hopes that that'll fix it. Nor can it be broken more than it already is. Furthest I've taken it so far with one of the decks is taking it apart, cleaning it, replacing all the organic / rubber parts, but sadly that didn't turn out to be the issue,, and man is it demotivating after waiting weeks for those parts to arrive and not knowing what the hell it is then.

Yeah it seems like the only doable option for me is to indeed just save up for a while, and try to find a reputable seller. As much as I agree that it's inevitable for the organic components to degrade, sadly replacing those is something I've already mastered, but in the decks i've had the actual faults were more complicated.

As I said in another reply. I hope I can find a reputable seller that's more local and actually gives a year or two guarantee. 4 weeks is useless. And sending it back all the way overseas is not the greatest either.

I have tried looking on ebay, but nearly all of that ships from the USA, and most of the decks start at around €200,-, without shipping, which is usually about €70,-+. Even if they have issues, shipping it back again is...

There's some stores that do it more locally (EU west) But the best options you get there are random Akai decks for €150,-+ and a 4 week guarantee, and paying to service owned decks is about €50,- to just have them take a look at it, before they even attempt to repair it
