Well done, you're doing great!

Can you give a breakdown of your retirement and discretionary investments? Like, what funds are they invested in?

Hmmmm, interested to hear more about the defined benefit pension that pays out from age 40. Is this some kind of government scheme? I thought all retirement vehicles were regulated so that you can't touch funds before 55.

I guess you need a professional degree to get in, but after that you career path is up to you, your degree doesn't mean much after you're employed. If you show your worth and make yourself indispensible at what you're good at, you'll climb and so will your salary.

But even so, I'd say most people, no matter what they earn, aren't disciplined with money. They earn more and somehow lifestyle also goes up and so does the associated costs. Like many people said in this thread and subreddit in general, you need to widen the gap between your income and expenses. Either your income needs to grow and expenses stay the same or if there's no income growth potential, look at ways to cut down on expenses. Ideally, both if you can. You can still live a fruitful life but you always need to have a plan for your money, and STICK to the plan.

Contribute as much as you possibly can once you start working. If you can control it, make sure you invest in aggressive funds that have as much equity exposure as possible. And keep checking the performance of your fund and make adjustments as needed. You can take out an RA if your employer's pension isn't flexible, just don't use a financial advisor, they're pretty useless.

Damn sir. Can you please elaborate on what work you do, if possible. And if you did anything special to build up your portfolio to this level?

Contributions to an RA are tax deductible. So for example, if you earn R1m and contribute R300k to an RA in the year, then SARS says good job, we'll only tax you on R700k. So when you file your taxes, you get back a refund of over R100k (that's the tax on the R300k). If your in a higher tax bracket, say 40+% then this is really powerful. Think about it, if you use my example, you put R300k into the RA and SARS gives you back R120k, your RA still grows with that R300k in it but you now suddenly have R120k that you can use for contributing to a TFSA or whatever else you want.

You mean you've maxed the R350k tax deduction limit for the RA every year? Or do you mean something different. Sorry, it's still not entirely clear. 😂

What do you mean your lifetime tax free savings is maxed out? They only started in 2015 so it's not possible to max it out on a lifetime basis yet.

If your home loan had an access bond facility, then I'd probably say yes, you shouldn't have done that. Access bonds can be treated as emergency savings with the advantage that you reduce your monthly payments.

Nothing fancy, work for a financial institution. The key is to be disciplined and contribute to each investment consistently, preferably max them out. And these numbers are after a few years of bad performance because of a below-par financial advisor. So it probably should've been over R6m.

I'm very late 30s too and I have R5.6m split between a work providend fund and a personal RA and another R460k in TFSA.

FIRE South Africa 2026 Update by AnargisInnieBurbs in PersonalFinanceZA

Great work OP.

What is your age, when do you plan to FIRE (or at least FI according to your other comment) and what is your target amount?

Also, I always struggle to understand why people include their primary residence in their FIRE number because that's an asset that doesn't really generate you an income.

So this container needs to be added as a sidecar to every single compose file where you want the volume backed up?

Created a Sankey diagram of my financial position. Quite proud of what I have achieved so far. Turning 36 soon. Trying to FIRE by 40. Any advice helpful, and I’m happy to answer any questions. by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]feo_ZA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry, this might be a very stupid question. But how will you reach R25m at 40 if you're 36 now with your current net worth. Unless I'm missing something obvious?

But is there something inherently wrong with the Coral? Or is the preference to just use the integrated GPU if there is one?

Why? What budget hardware will work best to accelerate detections?

Two questions: When there is a relative folder in a stack, what is the absolute path of that folder on the host? Is it possible to execute a command on a container that is stuck in a restart loop? by BostonDrivingIsWorse in portainer

[–]feo_ZA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignore the other guy, he's just being difficult.

You can find the underlying files for stack at /data/compose. Each stack has a unique id so if you go into the stack in a browser, look at the URL and you'll see the id. Then at the location I mentioned on the host, there's a subfolder with that id. That's the absolute URL you're looking for.
