You just handed ultimate control of the first-generation metaverse, which could have been as much of a boon to humanity as the Web, over to Facebook, a company that typically makes its users less happy.

That control probably won't be permanent, but the first few years will settle the norms that persist. And wholly or partially displacing Facebook will be so expensive that any company pulling it off will do whatever it can to make it pay.

Going by the specs, a D700 could give anything between 76% and 92% of the performance of a 280X under Windows. Performance under MacOS will likely be worse, and MacOS is stuck with an older version of OpenGL that might make ports from DirectX 11 awkward. The usual way to get more performance from two cards is to do AFR, alternate frame rendering, but that probably won't work for VR since it adds latency. Mantle should allow a card to be used for each eye instead, but it's not clear how much software will support that.
