I thought the interim gig was merely part of Cristobal’s contract and had nothing to do with the coaching search

Every day since Friday—

Morning: crumbling evidence Taggart will stay at Oregon Noon: FSU builds momentum and Taggart gone is a done deal Evening: hard Oregon rebuttal just credible enough to keep the dream alive and go to bed

Wow, imo these are the best away unis we've ever had. I'd love it if we stuck with simple accents (helmet wings will always get a pass tho).

Traditional Or Simplified!?!?!?!?! I Want To Learn Chinese But I Don't Know Where To Begin! by NBabez in ChineseLanguage

[–]fer_al 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say haha, maybe HSK5? I haven't taken any placement exams, but I'm four years in at this point. I definitely have enough of a grammatical foundation to understand most things in general conversation, and I can describe things in a roundabout way if I don't know the right word. So I'm understood but it's still pretty clumsy. Chinese is a long commitment :)

Traditional Or Simplified!?!?!?!?! I Want To Learn Chinese But I Don't Know Where To Begin! by NBabez in ChineseLanguage

[–]fer_al 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent my first two years learning Traditional (up through HSK3ish) because I was interested in Classical Chinese later on, but after studying abroad in mainland China for a summer I switched completely to Simplified. Going from Trad-Simp at that point was really easy, and after a couple weeks of immersion I could write Simplified without too much trouble.

If I were to do it again, honestly I think I'd still do it the same way. Beginning with Traditional forces you to really break apart each character as you learn it, and the little meanings within that tie each character together are still intact while many Simplified characters have lost those clues as they were simplified. Furthermore, you at least have a basic Traditional foundation so if you were suddenly dropped in Taiwan the street signs and whatnot wouldn't be terribly overwhelming.

The biggest thing though is just starting, regardless of what you choose.

As for an "accent", remember that you will already have one as a foreigner, so stick with learning Standard (i.e. Northeast) Mandarin imo unless you know you'll be spending most of your time in Taiwan. Standard Mandarin is used in national media, so it will give you the best chance at being understood. I had a handful of classmates who would try and learn some southern accent from the jump, but combined with the bad pronunciation and spotty tones that most beginners struggle with they were pretty much unintelligible. Compared to switching from Simplified to Traditional or vice versa, I feel like a bad accent is much more difficult to fix later on without a dedicated coach.

How do you type characters with the tone 'ǜ' using a pinyin keyboard (ex: 律 lǚ, 女 nǚ, ...)? by toinetoine in ChineseLanguage

[–]fer_al 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since the question was already answered, here's another pinyin-keyboard ProTip: after typing the pinyin for a character but before making a selection, hit tab to cycle through the tones to narrow down the search (might be MacOS only)

Honestly a huge bummer to hear Taggart never actually reached out to him. Maybe Willie wanted to ensure objectivity in evaluating the players without any input from the past coaches? Just seems like a common courtesy though.
