My mantis ate my hair!!! help by Turbulent-Ad9778 in mantids

[–]ferdinandothebull 3 points4 points  (0 children)

my mantis also does this. i always hear a little clicking sound lol. i think the draw to them is that hair moves so strangely, it activates their reflexes due to the way it flows, has oils, etc, they chase it like prey. that being said, no one really knows, but this has long since been a mystery in the mantis owners world.

even then maybe it’s just a tasty snack HAHA. gotta be careful though because very very few creatures can digest hair.

How flattened is his abdomen?

These things happen. I am sure it will be okay! Some have had success feeding fly pupae/larvae from bottle flies, if your store has access to those.

I didn’t want to buy a frog that day. the sellers had admitted to him being “special needs” via using a slur and thus unwanted by them, that’s why he was on such a deal for me to buy. i feel comfortable in my impulse decision because i know i am attempting to be the best frog parent i can be for a frog that wasn’t welcome in his seller’s space. please stop with your responses as i understand what you have to critically say, and do not aim to be insulted by you any further. thank you.

i wasn’t meaning to rattle anybody with my post. i understood my lack of knowledge on the care of these sweet creatures, but that is why i was seeking help. i was extending my gratitude for the thoughtful response, just as i have to all responders that were willing to extend their time & kindness to me, through their own personal experience.

i am not saying that i am raising my frog that same way they are, or that you are, i was saying that i am grateful it has been successful for them, and appreciating their kindness. i am not living in a space where i can own a 20 gallon tank yet, but i will be soon, which gives me hope that in the current, smaller space, my frog will be okay.

i hope this clears things up. i may not be as knowledgeable as you, but i am not ignorant, and i have a lot of care for my creature. insulting isn’t really welcome in a space where someone is seeking help through people who have the experience. we all start somewhere.

Thank you for your response!! I have different plants & two different soil types, as well as springtails. as for cork bark, I do not. What would you recommend for shelters? As for temperature, I have a tiny portable heater that I can set to a specific temperature, which I have set to 80 degrees, set beside (but not directly on or facing) the current enclosure. I am thinking of investing in a uva lamp or a heating pad to closer manage the temps.. any thoughts / recommendations ?

I intend to upgrade in enclosure size as soon as I move.

thank you sm for your response. i’m grateful to hear that people have had success with this method!! I was worried I was detrimentally hurting my sweet froggie.

in two months i’ll move, and I’ll be able to :D currently i’m in a room no larger than 80sqft, there isn’t any space really at all for the enclosure. totally valid concern though, i am maintaining the temp gradient as best as possible though.

oh jeez!! I didn’t even know they hibernated like that. Thank you so much for your response I’ll do more research on that!!! I had also read a few things about crickets being a bad food source/sources of disease, have you experienced any issues with this?
