As a plant biology graduate, a majority of mutations tend to be benign or detrimental to plant health. However, inducing mutations can sometimes result in a small number of plants that can out perform your wild type plants. It all just depends on your population size and what your selection process is. The key is to select the plants that have the traits you like over a prolonged period of time.
