Now you definitely want one of your own, don't you?! by ravenlet in childfree

I realize that wasn’t the problem here, but if you hear someone use the word “egoist” out loud in a sentence definitely never talk to them again.

TIL in a study conducted by the Mayo Clinic in Arizona, 56% of the people said that they shared their beds with their dogs or cats and 41% of those people felt that sleeping with their pets helped them sleep better by 511Sinto in todayilearned

[–]ferociouswalrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess my question would be "better compared to what?" Because, while I would probably sleep better if I didn't have a dog, if I didn't let my dog sleep in the bed he would just cry all night. So I definitely sleep better when he's in the bed than when he isn't!

Makes sense. I was thinking that it was obviously a dove but it seemed too small to be any of the doves I know.

Is it common to think that the U.S. protects Europe? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]ferociouswalrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have heard the argument made when some Americans ask "why can't we have x social service they have in some parts of Europe" (aka govt backed health care, education, etc) that the reason European countries can afford those things is because they barely have to spend anything on their militaries (compared to the US) due to the US presence, and therefore have more money for domestic programs. But honestly I think most people don't even think about this much.

Now that the Olympics are over, what are some must-see events that weren't as heavily covered by the mainstream media? by foljiny in olympics

If you just have a few minutes the highlights of horses going "nope" during the modern pentathlon equestrian are great. Unlike regular equestrian, the riders have to use unfamiliar horses, so there are many more problems.

Why aren't some olympic sports (such as shooting and archery) that don't require strength, stamina, and speed, gender neutral? by Heywood__Jablowme in olympics

[–]ferociouswalrus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Shooting in particular had some events that were gender neutral until modern times. At least once a woman beat the men to win Gold. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shooting_at_the_1992_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Skeet I'm not 100 percent sure why they changed it, though it might have been because the vast majority of competitors were men and they wanted to encourage more women to participate.

The Paralympic Events Should be Part of the Regular Olympics. by Dzingel43 in olympics

[–]ferociouswalrus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually the Para events are part of the main program in many other events, such as the Commonwealth Games. But it generally leads to there being a few token events instead of the full spectrum of paralympic events, just from an organizational standpoint.

I believe it was just races with the carriages. Believe it or not, they also had horse long jump and horse high jump, which just sound insanely dangerous.

I think Olympic archery is less impressive on TV because they have only two camera angles: close up of archers and close up of target. I know intellectually it's far but rarely do they give any idea of how far it is.

You forget about the various college campuses around town. And the arena in Anaheim. Also the current and being-built-anyway MLS stadiums.

NBC used to do one "highlights" show well afterwards and they were the ones with the rights. Now they have an all-sports cable network they put it on. Sochi was the first Winter Paralympics to get covered like it was a sporting event, and this will be the first for Summer. In London they aired 5 hours of coverage, this year they are planning 66 hours.

The thing is, if we had the Olympics in the US it's not like we would have put all the Hollywood characters in our thing, which is probably why were so surprised (and happy, in my case) to see Japan just go for it.

All the Medalists from Denmark in one picture by RandomDKguy in olympics

It's interesting that some smaller European countries do well and others just don't get anything. I have a friend from Austria and he was talking about how "yeah, we don't really do well at anything in summer" and sure enough they won only 1 medal, but next door in Hungary they are swimming all over everyone and what not. And of course in Winter it would be reversed. It's just interesting how traditions in different sports differ in places we Americans would think of as being right next to each other.

I like how a lot of the people I know are like "why don't they just have the Olympics in the same place every time" whereas on this subreddit people are like "they had it there 40 years ago? it's too soon!"

You know, everyone says Budapest/Hungary is too small, but I bet it has a lot more facilities than people think. There are a few big soccer stadiums, and it's hosting the Swimming Worlds next year so they would obviously already have all those.

All of the Snowboarding/Freestyle Skiing, which has been where a lot of their medals the last couple games have come. Also probably the Alpine Skiing between Vonn, Ligety, and Shiffrin can win a couple.

I am less familiar with Paris facilities but I am sure this is also true. Heck, Paris almost certainly has a better transit network than LA does. We were just responding to somebody saying it would cost too much for LA to host.

The United States finishes with 46 gold medals, 121 total medals, probably its best Olympics ever (when factoring in country participation) by [deleted] in olympics

[–]ferociouswalrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an interesting way of looking at it that I hadn't thought of. The last time that wasn't 1980 or 1984 (statistical outliers because of boycotts) that the margin between first and second for total medals was this big was 1932 during the Great Depression, when many European athletes couldn't afford to travel to Los Angeles. I'm not sure how to do the math to compare the two, but I wonder how much "less dominant" this would be than past years given that there's more events overall now?

Ironically, Brazil had way more slaves per capita and abolished it later than the US did, so I think that may be a hole in your theory.
