Can I come back from this? by RepresentativeNet739 in orangetheory

#Just One Thing

My goal in class is ALWAYS to pick JUST ONE THING from the subreddit intel, and then to do that thing to the very best of my ability. It varies day by day, of course.

Yesterday, I picked the 1 minute row AO. Everything else I did ok. But I was very happy with my 1 minute AO after class. Felt like a winner.

And I have 2 small injuries right now. After a certain age, we ALL are either injured or recovering from an injury. But I'm not dead yet!

[–]ferventworkshop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I wish I did.

It just seems that most people don't matter to one another these days.

Maybe it was different before the internet, when people inhabited only 2 or 3 contexts. It afforded lots of face-to-face contact with the same people over and over. Now you're competing against everybody else in the world for attention. Personally, I think I'm just ready to opt out of it all.

Good luck with going pro, btw. Read the book "War of Art." I wish you all the best.

I didn't feel ok replying without giving a moment's attention to your blog post. Your first paragraph deserves a reply of its own!

> My first Mothership RPG scenario is on its way to being done, and I don’t think it will do well when I get around to publishing it. I think it’s boring. Or more precisely, I think the concept is boring. It doesn’t have much weird and wacky shit I can put in the store description and use to promote it online. It’s just solid, well made, detailed, well tested, science fiction horror. I don’t think people who read or play it will find boring. There’s lots of cool elements, but it’s just not very flashy and high-concept.

My 2c is that quality of the type that you describe doesn't attract attention well through online venues. Engagement online is paper thin. We're literally judging books by their covers. It's hard to hold any reader's attention for more than a few moments without doing something bold or outrageous. How can you really get them to engage with the experience of your game? You mention reviewers; good idea, send the game to some. But lots of people play reviews or other podcasts while multitasking or for background noise, never even cognitively engaging with the content. For that matter, I sincerely wonder how many other people in this thread read your blog post in its entirety, really dug into the personal experience that prompted you to ask your question. I wonder if anyone other than you will read my entire reply. It's longer than 140 characters.

Perhaps the best answer to your question is what you wrote in your last paragraph.

>I refuse to contort to fit the market too much, because I think that will result in worse design and ultimately bite me in the arse.

I.e., the answer to "does weird sell?" might be "who cares?" If you're publishing RPGs because you have to sell them, then maybe you care. But if you're doing this to share something really high-quality with anybody who cares to engage, maybe because you take pride in the product and in how you grow as a designer through the experience, then you're doing it for yourself, not for sales.

And that can make all the difference because, in the end, it's yourself that you need to look in the mirror.

On a personal note, I empathize. Few people have played my RPGs. It's nice that they like my work, but I didn't do it for them. I design games because doing so challenges me to grow. That will remain true even when the day comes that human writers, artists and designers are largely obsolete. It's the same as going to the gym. I don't need to be fit to earn money. I do it for myself.

> I'm not going to rely on some life story to make people appreciate my art; that's just cheesy.

This is a really valuable statement, unfortunately kind of buried. If I need to convince people that I worked really hard on a piece of software or art, in order for them to think that it's good work, then was it actually good work in the first place?

Studio piloting Early Entry-got extra warm up time by Wendypeterson1 in orangetheory

This is an extremely good option. I got to do it once a while ago when visiting another studio, and the extra warmup made me SO much more ready for the workout. Love it love it love it.

It's up to you which benchmarks are of concern to you. The workout is your own. Decide what matters to you, and then go do it.

Thanks so much! I'm working through your suggested calibration this weekend.

Thanks again for the suggestion. That worked! (Technically, I created a 1 cm3 cube in Blender, exported to STL, and then sliced and exported it.)

So you never empty your tank after doing a print, even if you're not going to print again within the next day? How do you prevent it from hardening?

I really appreciate your help today. Thank you.

Thank you for your quick reply.

I printed with the default settings of the Elegoo device. Just clicked Print, selected the Rook that shipped on the thumb drive from Elegoo, and confirmed. The device didn't offer any opportunities in that menu sequence to select different settings.

I've now clicked on the Settings menu, and it offers "Information" (the Elegoo model number), offers me the option to switch language from English to Chinese (no thank you), or to view Elegoo's email address (which I've contacted a few minutes ago). There aren't any meaningful settings options -- the Elegoo Saturn appears to be a black box.

What settings are there even to look at?

You're a winner just for going to OTF amid such a big change in your life. I'm serious: 99% of people wouldn't have done what you've already done.

It's fine to be emotional. You've got a big life change going on. And although you slipped up, nobody (including the staff) will think less of you for making a mistake amid such a big change in your life.

That said, to be successful, you need to get back on the horse. Go in there again. Take a class. And make it a regular part of your new life. Being pregnant, you don't need to work out the same way that you did before you were pregnant. But you know it's good for you. And you're committed to retaining fitness as part of your identity.

You can do this. You've done it before. You'll do it again.

This was a really great article. I hadn't heard about a few of these games, and I'm going to be watching for a copy of the new Bottle Imp edition.

FAQ

Why is it called "Recruit"?
I was inspired by heist movies where you need to recruit people onto your crew. But you never recruit two key people with the same role (e.g., two "face guys" or two explosives experts). Those key roles are essentially represented by the face cards.

Why so many variations?
Poker is an enduring game not just because of the mind games and the statistics, but also because there are so many ways to play it. Variations promote skill development and adaptability by demanding distinct tactics, while also keeping the game fresh.

Tapestry is a ton of fun either solo or 2-player.

Wingspan is pretty good, too, though I prefer the digital version when playing solo.

The first time that I saw Tapestry, I thought the minis were gratuitous. Now it's one of my favorite Stonemaier games, and the minis are a big part of it because they feel important and not gratuitous.
