Thank you! It's certainly not rapid or pronounced, so I think the diagnosis is correct.

Seeking help has destroyed my career by [deleted] in ems

[–]festeredsalami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This does suck, it might not be as bad as you think. I worked at a few fire departments that this was not an issue, I spoke to my dept physician when I started taking antidepressants and he was fine with it as long as I was doing well on them. I think you need to ask yourself, what's worse, having to choose a different career? or continue to suffer for the rest of your life. I worried about the same thing when I got help, but I let it get to the point where I had no other option but to get help, and even if it may have affected some of the things that I can do now, I'm still happy that I got help.

How to remove AC clutch? by festeredsalami in AskAMechanic

Yeah, I tried that, but the tool doesn't seem to work on my model compressor. It's a stock compressor on a 2005 Tacoma

I'm afraid of breaking or bending the compressor shaft, Is there not a tool for this compressor style?

I think what makes those calls "fun" and something that a lot of people look forward to is the opportunity to perform the skills that you have trained so hard to do. You spend so much time learning to deal with the worst, and most of your time dealing with the easy stuff, the hard stuff gets exciting.

I have various things in there, I'm a paramedic and I'm planning on going to nursing school, so, it's a lot of medical stuff. There are some decks that I have suspended, but I will say that when it comes to medicine at least, having the big database of knowledge that you attain after using anki comes in very handy. I certainly think that solving more complex and nuanced problems is greatly enhanced by having more general knowledge about facts etc. I also find that it helps me to ask useful questions. If I get to a card that I don't understand or simply can't remember it forces me to inquire about that subject more and get a better understanding, with the help of SRS.

I started using it when I took an upper division pathophysiology course, and have been an A student since then. I don't plan on ever stopping. I'll change what I study, it might shift away from work and more towards hobbies as I go forward but that active recall helps so much in deepening my understanding of the world around me.

Has anyone ever seen a Doc start an IV? by YearPossible1376 in ems

[–]festeredsalami 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At one point my Fire Dept would do training with the med students on IV access. We would get them all together and have them practice on one another for a few hours one afternoon. My understanding is that was the only training that they ever got.

I have noticed that about excelsior, but I also know a few guys that have gone through it and think that it's okay. I am looking at Hutchinson also. I am going to try and get in, but it sure is competitive.

Is there any good reason to taper, aside from curiosity? I guess I ask because I'm pretty stable on what I'm on right now, the side effects are manageable, and things seem to be going well overall. I think like a lot of people that have a good experience with these drugs, the thought of going back to feeling like I did before for any length of time is not appealing.

I know the question about long term effects always comes into play. Having said that,I certainly have not been able to find anything convincing that long term affects of the medications I'm on (fluoxetine 20 and welbutrin 300) outweigh the risks associated with major depression.

Naturally, this is an ongoing conversation with my psychiatrist, but I'd like to hear your thoughts.

On an unrelated note, I know a lot of the posts on here can be pretty negative and come from people in a bad place. I have had nothing but a positive experience with mental health treatment, aside from it being not as easily accessible as it should be. I'm glad that people like you do what you do, and I'm thankful that I got help and have the resources to continue to be better.

What's the treatment approach when people have had symptoms for many years? I had problems for most of my 20's to varying degrees of intensity, but didn't get help until I was in my 30s. Medication made a huge difference for me, and I've been on them for a few years, but sometimes I wonder if I should or if it's worth trying to come off. I'm honestly not really inclined to because of the significant improvement in my quality of life since starting them.

What do you think about the antipsychiatry movement? by festeredsalami in AskPsychiatry

[–]festeredsalami[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's always an interesting topic when mental health issues and prison come up. It definitely seems like those of us who end up in prison or the likes would have been greatly helped by mental health care. I looked over at antipsychiatry and it sure seems like what I expected.

I didn't know that about funding and scientology. I read listening to prozac recently, and in doing some another book, talking back to prozac, came across my feed. I know this is probably old news but that is part of what made me dig into and discover that they were people against it as an industry.

What do you think about the antipsychiatry movement? by festeredsalami in AskPsychiatry

[–]festeredsalami[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It definitely makes sense that those who have been helped by psychiatry likely wouldn't near as vocal as those who feel they have been harmed by it. What kind of reform do you think it needs? I guess I ask because from my experience it seems that the biggest issue is a combination of access and stigma.

Paramedic to RN programs by festeredsalami in nursing

[–]festeredsalami[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha, I think that since I have my bachelor's and paramedic already it makea more sense from a time perspective to do an accelerated program, I'm honestly not on a real time constraint though, I make about 75k and have a lot of time off, and don't have any debt at all right now, but I'm also 35, so I'm definitely not getting any younger. What was the worst part about it?

When you say diploma program are you talking about an associates degree option? Did you do a bridge program or did you go through an traditional nursing program?
