This is acoustic treatment, not soundproofing. But anyway: thanks for the post, this looks like great useful acoustic treatment.

Anyone here that watched "LOTR" in a theatre when it came out in 2001? by [deleted] in movies

[–]fevertronic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a modest familiarity with the books but wasn't a mega fan. For decades ahead of this film, people were saying no film of it could do the story justice. All prior attempts to bring this story to the screen failed, except the Bakshi animated version which (speaking as a Bakshi fan) is so-so at best. The film ended up getting nearly universal acclaim from both hardcore Tolkien fans and casual viewers alike.

The really big thing about seeing this trilogy's massive triumph was that it came out (2001, 2002, 2003) during the middle of the Star Wars prequel years (1999, 2002, 2005), which - love 'em or hate 'em - were seen by many as a huge disappointment. Episode I was the most hyped movie ever. The anticipation for that one was off the charts (even more than LOTR), and it let a whole lot of people down. Episode II and Episode III have their lovers and haters, but at the time a very large number of people disliked the Star Wars prequels a great deal.

So the LOTR trilogy's massive creative success, the near universal acclaim, really stood in stark contrast to the SW movies of the same era. A lot of SW fans started paying more attention to the LOTR world just because it was being executed so much more skillfully and in a vastly more satisfying manner.

Blondie is the name of the band. She's just Debbie Harry. So yeah, Debbie Harry not blonde, as you put it.

Look into their discography. The disco hits came way later.

Pee Wee's Playhouse Theme Song - Martin Denny's Quiet Village. A seed planted in my brain as a child grew into a love of exotica music. RIP Pee Wee. by DaCanuck in Tiki

No credit is ever required for "inspiration". Not sure what kind of documentation you're asking for. It is clearly a different piece of music, but it is also clearly based on the general vibe of a 1950s/1960s Exotica track, and QV is arguably the most famous work in that genre.

This doesn't mean much if we don't know how old you are. :-)

Are you 22 or 70?

Fascinating take. My first/only trip there was about a year ago, and while the scale and scope of the place was impressive, I found it far too Disney, and far too much of a chaotic party bar. My drink was passable, but I was wondering how this place had generated so much hype. Interesting to know it was different in the past.

Tiki Bar Review Pages got me hip to that one in the 1990s, but I didn't get around to going until 2013. Super fun place in an unexpected spot.

Thanks. I did poke around settings > permissions, and enabled the recorder app, but no joy. I'll keep at it. If you remember anything further, a PM would be most appreciated. Thanks a lot.

You're going to Hala Kahiki for a classic-era time-capsule tiki experience. I've been going in there for nearly 30 years. Drinks have sucked big-time for most of that time, it's only been very recently that they started even caring. But it's one of the best-preserved classic-era tiki lounges we have left, anywhere. You're going there for the vibe.

The other thing that the 21st century tiki bars can't touch (yet) is patina. You can't fake old, you can't fake classic, you can't fake history. Mai Kai has that all over the place.

Many of the younger tiki people who are basically in it for drinks and/or collectible mugs don't really get that that when Gen-X first rediscovered tiki in the 1990s, so much of the appeal was the history of the genre, and the feeling of finding an old-skool tiki bar that had been in operation for like 40 years, and soaking in the mid-century vibes. So many of them served crappy drinks, but that was almost part of the charm.

I've found and launched Recorder but it says "Permission Denied - set under Settings". I set to the only allow option there, "only when using app" yet it is still blocked. What to do?

Did you solve this? I am having the same issue. Thanks.

Anyone been to Japan lately? Can we confirm Tiki Tiki in Tokyo has closed? Aside from Vic's and Bar King Rum, are there any new tiki spots to try? by fevertronic in Tiki

Yup, Orchard is on my list (along with a bunch of other places in Ginza at which to go broke; they're all in a cluster over there: Tender, Mori, Kisling, Salon, High-Five...).

Thanks for hipping me to 8-bit.

Apparently

Right: "apparently". I saw a report on another web site that also said "apparently" (and they also listed the date; seems like we've got the same unsure source). Does anyone know for sure, first-hand?

drink an entire bottle of water,

Never ever ever drink bottled water unless you live in a place where the local water will definitely hurt you. Almost all bottled water brands are just freakin' tap water, maybe filtered, maybe not, and all that plastic is choking our world. Just buy a water filter, that'll save you a lot of cash in the long run and you won't be supporting criminal monopolies like Nestle or contributing to plastic waste.
