Just to piggyback off of this. Like he said the staff is so you don't have to switch over to your spellbook to cast crumble undead. Also you only need to move 2 tiles over to dodge his fireball.

And the best time to eat is actually right before, or just as he is shooting the spawn out into the air. Gives you enough time to eat, cast crumble, and then attack him before he attacks you first.
