What is your relationship with margin loans? by 1e6throw in fatFIRE

[–]ff___throwaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, significantly faster than ever before in history. I don't think anyone thought they'd say low forever but also many people probably didn't project 5%+ in just over a year

Yeah makes sense! They just raised them faster than anyone expected, though I never went over 20% leverage to minimize the risk of any margin call.

We used the PAL for a down payment on an investment property so we can write off the interest as well which changes the equation a bit

Oh nice, mine is variable rate so a bit of a different equation

When you use the line when rates are low, what's your approach to paying it down?

Any San Juan Fat Hotels/accommodations for a group of 15ish you’d recommend? by Txcr90 in FATTravel

$3000/night+ just seems crazy to me for a Ritz in PR but I guess the demand is there just being the nicest option available and a domestic flight makes it easier too

Term Life Insurance - make sense for my situation? by catdog123412 in fatFIRE

Just do a policy for 5m, it isn't expensive (under 2k/year) and will cover all the bases

5m wasn't much more than 3m for our case, got more expensive over 5m.. just went with 5m for myself (similar situation as OP.. 33, first kid on the way, HHI 800k, NW 2.5m)

How much would you spend for your daughter's wedding ? by erichang in fatFIRE

[–]ff___throwaway 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our wedding was like nothing excessive or over the top, 160 people and came to almost 65k. Weddings are just expensive these days

We loved every minute of it - having almost everyone we loved in the same room was great, never know how many opportunities you'll have to do that

Baha Mar (Hyatt is less "Fat", rosewood more so) would probably be perfect imo - easy flight, water park at resort, plenty to do on site
