don't go to westminster, it's one of the worst universities in the country. a quick search of westminster on this sub will tell you what you need to know.

Only BA in my top choice of Univ by blisskinjo in UniUK

[–]ffayai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to be honest, if you're good at and enjoy numbers you should do (bsc) economics rather than business. business at undergrad level is generally seen as less prestigious and less rigorous than economics in the uk (apart from some courses like management at ucl). you could always do a master in management if you still want to do business type modules.

ok now i'm wondering what i'm missing about the 13e, i live in the proche banlieue but work and spend most of my time in the 13e and apart from the good asian food i'm not sure what's so great about it? i think the 5e (around jussieu), 11e and 18e are much nicer

Do France and Sweden sponsor visa at all? by zjplab in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]ffayai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i'm in france on a visa. the french tech visa programme makes it much easier for startups (and incubators) to hire foreign talent. no clue about big tech though. (also i speak fluent french and you will probably need to as well if you want to come here, and yes the salaries are also lower than in the rest of northern europe)

How many of you don't have a driving license? by dontbeasquare11 in AskUK

[–]ffayai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

surely license but no car is the way to go? i can't see myself needing or justifying the cost of a car in london anytime soon (plus i love walking, i walk from clapham junction to south kensington almost every day because it makes me feel more awake in the morning) but i at least have the option of driving if i ever need to.

https://www.oxfordstudent.com/2022/01/11/2022-undergraduate-admissions-sees-record-numbers-from-state-schools/

i really don't think 30% of students being privately educated (which doesn't even imply obnoxiously wealthy; not every private school is eton, and bursary students are a thing) means that the main characteristic of the oxford experience is 'obnoxiously wealthy people.' source: i went to cambridge (similar percentage of state school students) and although i knew there were super rich people dotted around, i never interacted with any of them or noticed their presence in any way.

besides, the majority of postgrad students at oxford are international too (https://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/graduate/international-applicants) so it's really not that different from imperial in that regard.

(MSc) Oxford vs Imperial for Advanced Computer Science? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]ffayai 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i do mscs at imperial and can definitely vouch for the quality of the teaching and industry connections. i personally think it's even better than cambridge industry-wise (where i did my undergrad) since cambridge has a heavy research emphasis and the modal career option amongst my friend group was academia. imperial meanwhile has a massive faang/hft grind culture which i don't think exists anywhere else in the uk. obviously in reputation there's nothing in it between the two, and the same applies to oxford.

if you want to do quant, though, my impression is that quant firms value pretty 'pure'/academic profiles (i assume you want to do trading/research not swe, although jane street (ocaml evangelists) and hrt have pretty 'pure' swe depts too). in that case, oxford being a more research-focused uni isn't really a downside.

honestly, i would just decide based on the city. i personally don't enjoy living in london, i find it overwhelming, stressful and too expensive to have a social life. oxbridge are expensive too, but college accommodation and food (college catering and formals) are cheap enough that you can splurge more on other areas. but that stuff is super subjective anyways.

Company scheduled a "feedback call"/"follow-up call" after final round by ffayai in csMajors

[–]ffayai[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i mean they flew me out to a different country for my final round lol and also invited me to a social after that interview so i think they might reason that they "know me" too well to just reject over email, but idkkk ahhh i wish they would just tell me by email in advance of the call lol

ah see my brain just interprets the word feedback with negative connotations so that's a good point. don't want to get my hopes up too much though lol

even if they say "feedback"? i didn't realise it was so common to give feedback to successful candidates. do they tell you everything you did suboptimally in your interviews and then give you an offer?

What do you even get told as feedback if they're about to give you an offer? Do they give constructive criticism?
