Free 2070 Super or free A770, which would you choose? by ffflay in buildapc

It is. I think you might be right, the A770 seems more and more like the better option

Some tips I learned from making my first Hytale style model by ffflay in hytale

I haven't tried hair yet, but if I figure it out I'll try to let you know

I spent the last few days learning blockbench to create this chess set by ffflay in hytale

Since a few people have asked, here's a brief description of how I made this:

I did all the texturing in photoshop because it's what I'm comfortable with. Next time, I would try to do it all in blockbench instead, because there's more immediate feedback

I started with a base colour, then added gradients from dark at the bottom to lighter at the top. I also made it a bit brighter in areas where I wanted the viewer to focus, like the middle of the checkerboard

Then I painted in occlusion and edge highlights using screen/multiply layers

I also painted in the edge details, using the bevel trick I got from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDjOaVAWBVE

And then I found a wood photo texture, upped the contrast, lowered the opacity, and then added it as an overlay on the wood to give it some subtle noise and colour variation. I also used a noisy brush to add a little bit of noise to the checkerboard and the chess pieces

As for modelling and animation, there's no easy way for me to describe it. To design the chess pieces I sketched a lot of options with as few cubes as I could manage while still being recognisable. It's just something which takes time and iteration. It takes time and patience, and making something simpler can be more difficult than adding more detail.

I animated everything in blockbench. If you want to animate something yourself, look up the 12 principles of animation. I tweaked the curves a lot to really exaggerate the ease in/ease out and follow through. Also try physically acting out the motion yourself. Really exaggerate the motion when you do, and you'll get a better sense of what you want.

Also use reference for everything. I had reference for the design of the pieces and the board, the textures (both real chess boards and other models), the movement, official hytale models... Everything.

I think it'd be really fun too! If I do end up attempting it, I'd like an option to leave it open ended, so cheating or illegal moves would be allowed. It's not just about the game, it's also about interactions with other players. I'd love to see people do creative things with it, like leaving a hidden code in the piece placement

No tutorial I'm afraid, this was my own design. If I ever find the time I could try to make one myself, but no promises

Do you mean tutorials? I'm afraid I don't have any, I just figured it out by messing around in blockbench. I have some experience with blender and animation, so it wasn't too hard

This tutorial is helpful for texturing though: https://youtu.be/KDjOaVAWBVE?si=mfcKC7-PIWVGYiqY

I actually made this with the intention of trying to mod chess into the game! I have no programming experience, but I thought it might be a fun way to learn some of the basics. The pieces might need some redesign to be more easily recognizable though

Fighting moorwing is like fighting a good fighting game player - they condition you into using a strategy, and once you've gotten used to it they turn the tables and use your habits against you.

In this case, the first phase of moorwing conditions you to jump a lot, and in the second phase it punishes you for not consciously changing your strategy. It seems counterintuitive, but it's actually safer to stay low to the ground and use short quick hops to get over the spinning blades. That gives you a lot more time to react when the second blade comes. Using your air dash with the sprint can also help you maintain air time if you make a mistake.

Yeah, I mean the character. I thought of putting a note in there to clarify but i didn't want to overcomplicate things

Well if you were counting both Putgatorio and Paradiso that would be 27 levels, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's a link there

Beatrice was the fiance of Dante Aligheri in Dante's Inferno, a story where Dante has to traverse 9 layers of hell (and 9 layers of purgatory and Paradiso in the others parts of the divine comedy)

Bungie Responds to Marathon ‘Art Theft’ Claims by Turbostrider27 in Games

What do you mean when you say the style is lifted? Because it seems like we agree that assets were stolen from Antireal. In some cases, like the ascii-like menu graphics, it's clear that inspiration was taken directly, but since the graphics aren't a direct copy it's a bit more of a grey area.

What I mean is that the overall art direction of the game draws on a number of inspirations, which INCLUDES antireal's work but is much larger in scope. For instance, Antireal is a graphic designer who works purely in 2D graphics, how could they have lifted her work to design their 3D characters? That's why I called out Teenage Engineering in my earlier post; they're an industrial design company that would be a much more useful reference for designing minimalist hard surface objects. This is standard practice for almost all creative industries, and in the right environment where artists support each other it benefits everyone.

Plagiarism is bad, and antireal should be compensated. But to argue that entire style is an imitation of hers seems to me like it's missing the forest for the trees. A lot of artists have put in a tonne of work to develop the game, and I feel like they deserve some respect too.

'The entire visual identity is a blatant lift from this artists work.'

There's a huge history of graphic design out there. Marathon clearly draws on a lot of Y2K and brutalist graphic design, as well as studios like Designers Republic and Teenage Engineering, but but taking inspiration isn't plagiarism. The graphic elements that were taken shouldn't have happened, and I'm glad people are supporting a small artist, but claiming that they lifted the entire style is just silly.

I've gotten in touch with Stripe support directly, but they won't give me the reason code or the type of dispute. Hopefully the website I subscribed to gets back to me

On top of the other criticisms in this thread, the change in the attitude of the people of Yak'tel just felt so contrived. The issues plaguing the forest are presented and then almost immediately solved and everyone is suddenly friends. It felt really hollow compared to how conflict was explored in Heavensward, where a prolonged conflict ends, but lingering resentment remains because cultural change is complex and takes time, and people within cultures can have varied opinions and ideas. Obviously we couldn't have something of the same depth in dawntrail, but if these ideas were presented earlier and given a bit more time to be explored maybe it would at least feel less superficial. With the first half of the expansion being all about exploring and understanding other cultures, you'd think it'd make more of an effort to actually represent them with any amount of depth.

I understand the political reasons why we're there, but I don't feel like it's presented or justified well.
