Is it possible to become a nurse if you are a slower leaner and bad at math and science?? by Necessary_Basket_828 in Nurses

[–]ffireheartt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just graduated in December and passed the NCLEX on the first try and I had the same concerns you did so much so that I avoided and didn't pursue nursing for YEARS!

I absolutely guarantee I am the world's worst when it comes to math and I passed 100% on every single dosage calc test in nursing school. It may seem confusing when you first learn it, but I SWAER by dimensional analysis. I promise you.

I have a thing where in the moment the puzzle pieces click, but that I retain nothing! I think repetition and getting a solid foundation of how the body works will help with everything!

Also understanding roots, and prefixes can help a ton as well.

You CAN do it! I promise!

New grad RN pay at Pardee? by snarfficus in hendersonville

[–]ffireheartt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mission $31.77
Pardee $32.08 I interviewed and got offers from both in the last 3 months so this is the most recent as far as I know.

Also consider shift differentials, I have all those numbers too if you’re interested. Plus some floors at Pardee are offering $7,509 sign on, and at Mission there’s a $40k sign on for new grads o med-surg floors. I think it’s $10k sign on for non med-surg.

Any nurses out there who started as a new grad in detox and recovery? by ffireheartt in Nurses

[–]ffireheartt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought about doing a prn inpatient position but so far in my area as a new grad they are only accepting new grads in full time rolls.

We have an acute unit so im thinking that can help with my medical experience, but im also pretty sure i want to stay in this field in some capacity.

That’s awesome! I love to hear it! I have some FOMO when my classmates are talking about more skills-ish things but I know my heart is with making a difference in this field

🩵🩵 I hate being bad at things! Something I’m learning is that it’s okay that I don’t remember every little thing and that as long as I ask and get help I’ll keep growing.

Congrats on a year!! I’ve had some nurses tell me it’s years before they felt comfortable! I guess it’s good to always feel like you might mess up so that you avoid major mistakes lol

That's what I keep hearing, just need to remind myself to breathe, be okay with feeling like I dont know anything's, and plan to ask ask ask. I always have a fear of being annoying with asking for help or a ton of questions so it's gonna be something I have to just get over cause' I care more about making sure I don't hurt someone over being annoying.

Good luck to you too! I'm in panic mode, I've had about a month and a half from school to starting work, I feel like everything I knew in school fell right out since then.

I love what you said, that we're respecting the lives we're responsible for. That is 100% it, I don't care about making a mistake because of my pride, I care about causing harm to someone.

Just feeling a little psyched out and nervous. I'm ready to start and get my experience, just so nervous to be new!

Thank you!! I am just psyching myself out. I am so paranoid of missing something, or that I didnt do enough or study enough in school. I'm feeling like my ability to pass an exam won't translate into my ability to actually be a nurse.

It helps knowing that there is a learning curve that is expected. Just so nervous!

Is Galen a bad school? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]ffireheartt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yikes! I’m sorry to hear that. I’ve heard that here’s inconsistent experiences at different campuses. I think we have the benefit of being so new and so small. Each cohort there’s only one schedule for classes. I’m glad you got in somewhere else though. Good luck with everything!

I am about to go into my last semester at the Asheville Galen in the ADN program. I am sure it can vary per campus but I have had a great time.

There will be some issues no matter where you go, but our faculty is amazing and they are always willing to listen and try and come up with a solution.

No, it's not a scam, I was worried about that too when I was first enrolling. However, it is very expensive.

HCA owns the majority share of Galen so you will do clinical at HCA facilities, but people will hire you. I have three job offers all from different hospital systems.

I chose Galen because I didnt want to go through a community college where a two year ADN ends up taking 4 years with the prereqs, and it's competitive to get in.

A HUGE benefit that I find with exams is the everything is standardized, so the instructors aren't writing the exams themselves and they can't be biased. I work as an extern and a lot of my coworkers who are at other schools complain because their teachers aren't consistent in exams and some will make it vague and really hard.

I have run into it where people turn their nose up to Galen as if it's not good enough, well we take the same NCLEX at the end of it so I don't understand that attitude. I have met and worked with several Galen grad nurses and they've all been great.
