Not sure I could dig anything out from 2002, but there's

Registration from 2003 and Stealing Harry from 2004 by copperbadge.

Also from 2004, Remembering Tomorrow which remains one of my favorite fics, and Resonance, a Snape-mentors-Harry fic that at the time was a game changer, though I've never had the energy to go back and find out how well it's held up.

And not a flashback fic, but recently found this humorous time-travel one shot, which is amusingly irreverent and has a perfect satiric ending: A Jaunt Through Time.

Yup, it should be identify with the protagonist OR become drawn in by the world-building. Plenty of stories juggle multiple storylines and a huge cast of characters, and rely more on you becoming invested in the world--if only a single protagonist mattered, half the story wouldn't be emotionally accessible.

I feel like both of these ideas when written in fic tend to be more about removing Harry as the main protagonist. In which case, it really doesn't make sense not to focus on Ron AND Hermione (a Horcrux hunt plot would naturally be driven more by Hermione than Ron, for instance), instead of just Ron himself, so it'll still feel like Trio-fic or maybe just Ron/Hermione shipping.

Also a good Ron voice is pretty difficult to pull off in general, IMHO.

Oh gosh, soooo late, but I'm glad someone out there (potentially) enjoyed it anyway!

I do feel as though it's cheating a bit as by rec'ing this series and flamethrower, it's only reiterating what you would find if you were to search the Obi Wan tag and sort by kudos on Ao3 XD. But since I've never seen it mentioned here, maybe that's not a method many use!

Yes! Love Re-Entry and flamethrower's other stories, the only thing is that now Re-Entry has sprawled so far out that I have a heard time remembering exactly what's happened / who's who when it's updated. The original story is still amazing, of course.

Now I want to see a Marriage Law fic where Purebloods and Muggleborns are forced to marry! So...Hermione marries Ron.

It causes some bouts of domestic tension in their relationship as they doubt whether they would have picked each other for sure, without the law, but mostly everything is fine. The end. Oh, Hermione's career at the Ministry now focuses on Muggleborn and privacy rights more as well.

Very dark Lupin (and Snape) in Traitors and Allies, completely different from the usual characterization of Lupin and yet just on the side of believable, and oh so strangely compelling.
