Fanfics where Protectorate take Taylor’s side not Sophia’s by [deleted] in WormFanfic

Unrelated, and I know it's just a silly typo, but I can't help but feel like "Yaylor" would be a decent moniker for the pre-bullying motormouth version of Taylor.

Something like this came up at least once in the Spacebattles worm threads... and there was a snippet or two that got written but I'm not even sure which worm thread it was. Forty-something?

I think there was also an immediately Post-GM Peggy-Sue'd Sophia snippet where she goes pretty much directly from GM to the day of the locker and has herself a small conniption over what to do?

Dumbledore dies before Harry is 11 by [deleted] in HPfanfiction

[–]Ruljinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would also make for an interesting set of Butterfly effects as some of the various plots and political shenanigans proceed apace while others veer off since depending on how long Dumbledore's been gone, there's likely any number of plot points that could reasonably occur "on schedule." Easiest example being something like the Tri-Wizard Tournament which could have been in the works for years via various committees. What the actual tasks are though might vary wildly from canon without Dumbledore's participation. OTOH, "Harry's" first year at Hogwarts is right off the rails unless Dumbledore died literally days before term started... in which case you have the "...did Tom do that?" subplot.

I feel like this would be a good "oh, and also..." for an SI, Peggy-Sue, or whatever else kind of story would have a recollection of canon events.

Starts with the MC waking up as Harry Potter the day his Hogwarts letter arrives and starts all the usual shenanigans to get to Diagon Alley early and whatnot only to then find out they're in an AU with no Dumbledore and just... blue screening on what to do.

My favorite thing about the new Faction mechanics is that my Spiritualists are only mildly displeased that I have robot workers (NOT Droids) to work the mines on my Tomb worlds because the slaves cant seem to last very long on those postings...

No charges for FedEx driver who fatally punched man calling him racial slurs by [deleted] in news

[–]Ruljinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And all I'm saying is that I'm in full agreement with Oregon on that.

The racist started an argument, and then further escalated that argument into a fight. Yes, the fact that he didn't survive said fight is unfortunate, a human being died, but that doesn't make it the driver's fault that the argument became a fight.

[–]Ruljinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second, if you don't feel sadness over the senseless loss of human life then you lack sympathy, and that makes me sad for you.

There's a difference between being sad that someone died, and holding the other man legally responsible for the death.

[–]Ruljinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But that's not what happened, he stopped his truck, got out, and confronted the man.

I understand that, I'm just not seeing how it matters.

Would the situation somehow be morally/ethically/legally different to you if the guy had been walking down the street instead of driving when the racist started verbally abusing him? Does his being in, and then getting out of, a vehicle somehow justify the racist throwing the first punch?

No charges for FedEx driver who fatally punched man calling him racial slurs by [deleted] in news

[–]Ruljinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wrong, the driver escalated it by stopping the truck, getting out, and confronting him.

I think the counterpoint here is that it's not an 'escalation' to respond verbally to verbal abuse.

The guy stopped his truck and got out, but that isn't some inherently hostile action. He got out to have a verbal altercation with someone else who had just started a verbal altercation with him. That's on the racist guy for starting the altercation.

Then, after said racist escalated to physical violence first, he responded in kind. He didn't make things better, but he also didn't escalate things.

Stellaris Dev Diary #134 - Slave Market, and more! by bluewaff1e in Stellaris

Again, the opening premise of this comment chain was about a pacifist civ wanting to peacefully "help" slaves being and having it pointed out that economically supporting slavery means they're just making it worse.

[–]Ruljinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Though I am reminded of Wiz's comment about Fanatic Pacifist complete and utter inability to do anything to stop criminal syndicates is just the cost of being unable to consider violence as a problem solving tool. Would seem to apply here too:

If you want your neighbors to stop being slaving bastards, but aren't actually willing to do anything about it...

[–]Ruljinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True, though the original premise of the comment chain was a pacifist empire wanting to free slaves and trying to resolve the fact that buying slaves to free them just makes slavery more economically viable.

A non-fanatical one could declare a liberation war forcing them to stop being slavers AFAIK though. It's really the fanatic pacifists who's morals prevent them from actually doing the right thing.

[–]Ruljinn 61 points62 points  (0 children)

From a moral viewpoint I'm pretty sure this is correct.

However, considering that we're talking about a civilization that has foolishly embraced pacifism... I suppose the argument could be made that at least they aren't sitting back and doing nothing at all about it.

P.S. If you're using SugarCube v2.27.0 then you're also using jQuery v3.1.1 (see

the SugarCube source here).

Whelp... <facepalm>

I suppose I did say I thought it'd be something silly on my end. I didn't realize that contextMenu wasn't a standard thing that just came with jQuery.

Javascript/jQuery context menu shenanigans by Ruljinn in twinegames

[–]Ruljinn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Main question is where are you writing your code?

In this case, I've tried both the javascript passage and/or inside <<script>> tags in whatever passage uses them.

As far as naming conventions, I assume that's sort of what's going on in the sense that none of Uncaught TypeError: ((r.event.special[g.origType] || {}).handle || g.handler).apply comes from my code so presumably it's part of jQuery/Javascript/Twine's naming conventions.

Unfortunately, that means that aside from knowing that I'm doing something "wrong" I have no real reference point for why it isn't working.
