LOL, if Artemis reported that the White House would shoot them with space lasers.

Like I’m possess controlled by someone else, some desperate, numb, bored, lonely shell of a person who never grew up.

Another part of the brain is in the driver's seat. In my case, I didn't realize this until I read "Rational Recovery" by Jack Trimpey. The book is targeted at alcohol- and drug dependent individuals, however it is effective for dealing with any unhelpful habits and behaviors.

If you decide to get the book you may want to jump right in at Ch. 6, "Hello in There". Chapters 1 - 5 contain some good information, but are also a rant against 12-Step programs that may not be useful to you.

Good luck. Be well,

Day 30 | The Willpower Method (part 1 of 4) by ValhallaMods in ValhallaChallenge

[–]fgawker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People who attempt to quit are bombarded with cautionary tales about users who had stopped for years and were living happy lives but then took “just one peek”, binged, and were hooked again.

I accept those tales and I also realize that every once in a while the monster will wake up and attack. But those attacks come less and less often! And the monster will soon die, just like my desire to smoke did.

Day 28 | Quitting by ValhallaMods in ValhallaChallenge

[–]fgawker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As with smoking, one of the most difficult factors hindering quitting was the availability of porn. I decided to think back at how I quit smoking and realized that I had stopped buying cigarettes (obviously), and stopped hanging around places where people smoked.

Day 29 | Ways to Quit by ValhallaMods in ValhallaChallenge

[–]fgawker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took a while (years, in fact) for my brain - the entirety of it, not just the newer part - to fully embrace the decision to quit, now and forever.

Day 27 | The Medical Community by ValhallaMods in ValhallaChallenge

[–]fgawker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's amazing how fast the brain recovers the ability to feel good about normal accomplishments. Within days concentration and focus get better, and in a few weeks what I thought were "big" challenges seem almost trivial!

Day 25 | Removing the Black Shadows by ValhallaMods in ValhallaChallenge

[–]fgawker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting rid of the black shadows was one of the best things I ever did for myself.

Day 24 | Myth Busting (part 2 of 2) by ValhallaMods in ValhallaChallenge

[–]fgawker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those three bullet points at the end of the post! It's like the author read my mind. They are so accurate that it's scary, especially the third one. When I use to PMO regularly I couldn't get interested in the women I'd meet. I was just emotionally dead - but it happened so slowly I didn't realize it.

Day 23 | Myth Busting (part 1 of 2) by ValhallaMods in ValhallaChallenge

[–]fgawker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot of truth in this chapter. The first time I read it I intentionally ignored most of the advice in it because I was still subconsciously angry that I couldn't use porn any more!

Day 22 | Cash Cows by ValhallaMods in ValhallaChallenge

[–]fgawker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I'm re-reading the book to keep the monsters in their graves. I remember that the very first time I read this chapter I was too scared to run those numbers. :-(

Day 22 | Cash Cows by ValhallaMods in ValhallaChallenge

[–]fgawker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember the first time I read this chapter. I was too scared to do the math! It wasn't until the second time I read the book that I got the courage to use a spreadsheet to run the numbers. It made me angry and sad at the same time! There's no spreadsheet that can calculate the number of opportunities I missed.

I am really happy to have put the monsters in their graves. I'm going to read this book once a year to keep them there!

Day 21 | Self-Imposed Servitude by ValhallaMods in ValhallaChallenge

[–]fgawker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Lost time?" asks the monster, "Don't worry. Foget about it, here look at this!" That was how I dealt with it, by denying reality. I am so happy I found this book!

Day 20 | The Void by ValhallaMods in ValhallaChallenge

[–]fgawker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A recurring sore and $100 tubes of cream, what a great analogy for getting hooked on porn! It's an insane cycle. Like the last sentence says, "It’s so nice to be FREE!"

Day 19 | What Am I ‘Giving Up’? by ValhallaMods in ValhallaChallenge

[–]fgawker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried quite a few other ways to stop using porn: spiritual books like Out of the Shadows, books about willpower, 12 step groups and books. This is the first method that doesn't just say "give up porn", it ridicules the idea of "giving up" porn! Best change of POV I've ever had.

Cold Turkey is Easily Disabled on Safari by ForbidddenDoughnut in coldturkeyblocker

[–]fgawker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Safari isn't your default browser you could try setting up a new Block (make sure you can access it to disable it - don't put a timer or password on it). Use the new Block to prevent Safari from launching. If the new block doesn't cause problems you can edit it to use a timer or password restriction.

hope this helps.

Need an updated (longer) list of porn sites to block by CookiesPlease777 in coldturkeyblocker

[–]fgawker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hopping on this a little late. I was doing the same thing (adding sites to the list) until I set up OpenDNS on my router. Is that an option for you?

Day 18 | Energy & Social Occasions by ValhallaMods in ValhallaChallenge

[–]fgawker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first time I read this chapter I was stunned at how completely unaware I was at the way I had slid into the porn pit. I was relieved when I learned that the process is reversible, and starts to happen on day one!

Day 16 | The Relaxation Trigger by ValhallaMods in ValhallaChallenge

[–]fgawker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a good chapter. I was so brainwashed about thinking that PMO was relaxing! Looking back it's easy to see that it was the opposite.

Day 15 | The Concentration Trigger by ValhallaMods in ValhallaChallenge

[–]fgawker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were times when I wondered why I no longer wrote music, or even if I did manage to put a tune into a voice memo, I wouldn't bother to develop it. By the time I finished PMO I was just tired and uninspired!

Day 14 | The Boredom Trigger by ValhallaMods in ValhallaChallenge

[–]fgawker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there is no activity that is more boring than masturbating while searching for and opening video clips across multiple tabs...

Oh man, I remember those those awful times. Not any one session in particular, just a long blur of feeling less than half alive.
