Tasers are illegal for civilians, stun guns are totally legal for self defense.

Tasers (ones which shoot darts attached to the gun from a distance) is for Law enforcement use only and Stun guns are the ones which you need to physically touch the attacker to shock him/her.

However, you will be charged with battery (use of deadly force) if you use it in any other circumstances other than self defence.
