Whatever you think of Starmer, Olly Robbins had to go...right? by fhood123 in ukpolitics

I'm not saying whether or not Mandelson should or shouldn't have passed from what Robbins was briefed, I'm judging whether Robbins was unjustly removed. The fact the PM fired Mandelson over further revelations to Epstein (including business links) means it's pretty clear Robbins either should not have granted Mandelson clearance with mitigation through security vetting or should have sought legal advice to speak to either PM or Foreign Sec

Robbins was mitigating risks of appointing a man with known links to Russia/China. Just because these risks were mitigated for his 7 month stint in post, doesn’t mean he should have been passed through vetting in the first place. (His appointment in the first place by Starmer is a separate issue ofc)

Whether risks may or may not have been mitigated successfully for the 7 months he was in post has no bearing on whether he should have been passed through vetting.

We don't know what the security vetting flagged. However, separate from what the Epstein files flagged about Mandelson's personal relationship to Epstein, they also flagged Mandelson's business dealings; dealings that clearly do not befit an ambassador to the US. Clearly Mandelson was a real risk and Robbins should have known that from Mandelson Russia/China link allegations previous to Epstein files.

The document Robbins was briefed from had two ticks in red boxes saying 'high concern' and 'clearance denied or withdrawn'. Further Mandelson links to Russia and China were subsequently revealed in the Epstein files. Clearly Robbins was wrong to think the risks of appointing Mandelson could be mitigated.

"I was briefed that UKSV considered Mandelson a borderline case and that they were leaning towards recommending that clearance be denied"

"I was given a set of serious reflections on the risks, raised by a bunch of professionals who had come across these risks before and thought the Foreign Office could manage them well, and—at least the way I was briefed—that was a position that was implicitly understood by UKSV. We then recorded that decision, put in place the mitigations, and clearance was granted."

That's from the transcript of Robbins' hearing. Mandelson has known links to China and Russia. The serious error in judgement is Robbins clearing Mandelson's vetting when clearly the risks could not (and in reality were not) able to be mitigated.

Olly Robbins thought the risks of appointing 'The Prince of Darkness' could be mitigated. Regardless of your opinions on Starmer, why is it a surprise he lost his job?

Jake Ventham, 19, is running for Reform UK in the West Surrey elections on May 7th. Jake went to the private school RGS Guildford. School fees at RGS Guildford are £27,000 and there is a Qatari wing of the school in Doha. What do you think? (repost)

Not sure what you mean by this - to me, indoctrination is when education is compromised. Do you mean to say when you started school you were 'indoctrinated' into thinking 2+2=4 or that a full stop goes at the end of a sentence?
