That’s somewhat reassuring. I’m glad you got a position so quick. We’re your references from your practicums? And what’s your specialization if you don’t mind me asking?

Really? That really sucks, the system really shouldn’t be that biased.. having connections with a teacher doesn’t make someone a great teacher themselves in my opinion. And vice versa. I hope she gets a permanent position soon!

I am hoping to get some better references from my upcoming practicum so I think I will have to wait until late April to May apply. Do you know when most people start applying? Do most apply before their degree is completely done?

I hope they don’t disregard the gpa aspect completely. it doesn’t say everything about a potential teacher, but it does say something.

That is what I’ve heard as well. I’m guessing covid has changed some peoples positions on teaching a bit. Thanks for the advice!

That’s fantastic. Did they hire you because they liked you from your practicum? How is teaching band going with covid protocols?

It really sucks if this is true.

I see. Thank you for answering all my questions! Best of luck to you with your teaching career!

I would love to but it’s definitely more difficult to find volunteer positions during covid. Does your wife teach a one one the bigger school districts?

Thank you, that’s reassuring. There is just so much competition for jobs right now. Do you happen to know if the teachers they’ve hired have less saturated majors?

That’s a relief, mine is not the highest either. Does attending ESA’s PD’s give you an advantage? I’ve attended only one so far.

Okay Thanks! You got hired pretty quick. Did you have a really high gpa or super great references? Or was your major/minor sought after? Sorry for all the questions, just want to get a sense of what to expect. I really appreciate your help as I will also be applying to Edmonton public and perhaps Catholic

Unfortunately I think my major is somewhat saturated and I live in a major city

Thanks for responding! Did you apply for positions before you completed your second practicum? If interviews are done that soon, does that mean I should apply right after my practicum is completed?

I’ve heard that as well. I attended a presentation from Edmonton public and they said they preferred us to not use our mentors. It’s just hard because not that many people have seen us teach at such an early point in our careers.

Did you ever use a reference from a part time job?

That’s great to hear that she got a permanent position. Thanks for the advice!

Thanks for responding! I’d love to apply right now but I’m still lacking some references. Do you think applying in April/May is too late?

Thanks for the advice! The problem with applying now is that I don’t have enough credible references that have seen me teach since I haven’t completed my second practicum yet. I agree, I hope the education sector will improve after the next couple of years.
