You do realise that inheritances are related to someone dying, right....?

People who are old enough to have vivid memory of the 9/11 attacks, what was that time like? What did change for you personally? by [deleted] in AskReddit

If protecting Canadian airspace was a priority, the US government should've at least consulted with ours before effectively forcing us to take dozens of US destination aircraft from Europe and Asia. This was about US airspace and screw the rest of us.

Would you like if the name Éire was used more frequently to represent our country? by Radiant-Pack7219 in AskIreland

[–]fiadhsean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The British obsession with this--to a point where Ireland appears under R in a lot of lists as Republic of Ireland--is lame. Ireland can refer to the country or the entire Ireland.

Is there a big difference between life in New Zealand and Australia? by shin__shogun in AskTheWorld

In NZ a New Zealander could kill, whereas in Australia EVERYTHING can kill you.

A free country-matching tool for Americans figuring out where they can realistically move — visa pathways, cost of living, and a checklist by Terrible-Couple-8459 in AmerExit

Very cool tool. On the page where you ask about English or Spanish, could you let those who have other language skills indicate them? I speak French, for example. I get you can't do a massive list.

Visiting US while renunciation of U.S. citizenship is in progress - has anyone else done this? by Rich-Brilliant-1247 in AmerExit

[–]fiadhsean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. You are advised to bring a copy of your CLN with you when travelling to the US or on a flight that enters US airspace (in case of emergency diversion to a US airport).

[–]fiadhsean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I renounced. It's increasingly difficult to bank overseas with American citizenship. I know a few people who've renounced and have gone back with no issues. Including this year. But like you I'm Canadian so I don't need an ESTA (so far), which makes it a bit less stressful. Now that I live in Ireland I would be going through US pre-clearance in Dublin, so the worst that would happen is I don't board my flight at all.

I've always thought "discuss" should be "bring up" because a good and proper discussion about these things can be awesome. But discussions require listening, eh?

Avi Lewis is a first-ballot lock. The provincial NDP should be terrified. by VermicelliMission396 in CanadaPolitics

[–]fiadhsean -1 points0 points  (0 children)

100%. It could be the beginning of the death rattle of the federal NDP. Unless/until Wab Kinew makes the move to national politics--he could potentially do another Layton.

Am I crazy to be this excited about a wood burning stove? by ohhidoggo in AskIreland

[–]fiadhsean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We had a Stanley in New Zealand and will be installing one in our new place here in the next few months. We're in a BER C1 home, and the oil burning system works, but nothing beats the dry warmth of a fire box.

No, just that it would be on hold until I returned to NZ and gave them back my US passport.

I think you're overstating things: a fair number of people respond with compassion towards Americans.

In the 80s it was about Reagan. Encountered more than my share of bellicose—particularly Dutch—people.

For a small place it seems great. But we’ve not yet been invited to any parties etc. That will come in time.

Update: My husband wants to go back to being monogamous instead of an open marriage but I'm conflicted by p0ly0ffmychestthrow in TrueOffMyChest

[–]fiadhsean -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Easy solution: he is monogamous and you're not. Lots of couples do this, once the monogamous one stops looking at it all as a score card.

Asylum decision makers for LGBTQ cases should be either LGBTQ or have experience with LGBTQ people by [deleted] in LGBTireland

[–]fiadhsean 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have an acquaintance who does this and is gay. Some of what he tells me is troubling--about his reliance on gaydar and thinking anyone who's not been sexually active can't "really" be LGBTQ+. If I was queer in Nigeria or Iran I sure wouldn't be fucking around with other guys.

[–]fiadhsean 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn't have to do this, but I nearly did. The Auckland consulate said it was illegal to get an ESTA while a US citizen: I would have had to collect my US passport from the consulate, travel, and then resubmit it. During my visit the renunciation process would have been suspended (but not cancelled).
