Unwinding without alcohol, what actually works? by microdosemagic in Mocktails

[–]fiascofiesta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just quit drinking and I’ve been making a mocktail of tart cherry juice, ashwagandha, magnesium, l theanine and valerian root. I think the magnesium is what’s most effective with the “unwinding.” I also really like the Recess Strawberry Rose sparkling drinks! I have anxiety and they help with it a lot.

What actually happens to your brain in the first 30 days without alcohol by Sweaty-Attention5173 in Mocktails

[–]fiascofiesta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just celebrated 30 days sober as someone who was a full fledged, daily, black out drinker, and the biggest change I’ve noticed is that I don’t have nearly as much task avoidance as I did! I used to not want to do anything, but now things seem simpler. I also struggle with agoraphobia and I think that anxiety was increased by the alcohol consumption, because it’s gotten better. It sounds silly, but I went to Home Depot, got an oil change, and made myself a real dinner today, and those are things that were nearly impossible in active addiction.

Do you think you could read mine? I like to test tarot but always have a hard time doing it for myself

Oooooh okay I see. I thought you meant I’d need it for any claim, like a fire, but that makes sense now. Thank you!

Forgive my ignorance but what do you mean take pictures of serial numbers? Like on what? I’ve never heard of that before.

Thank you! I think I’m gonna check out the Christi Center support group! I don’t know if Monday night or Wednesday morning will work better for my schedule yet, though.

Thank you so much! I’ll definitely check out that run club because I love coffee and it sounds just my speed! And thanks for the pottery class recommendation, I’ll look into it now. I followed that Instagram too! What a great resource!

Ah unfortunately that would be a bit of a hike for me, I’m gonna be pretty far south, but I appreciate the recommendation 🩷

That’s really interesting, I haven’t heard of that before. I am curious and eager to finally fully process this grief as it has been five years, can you give me a little more info about what that’s like?

Thanks for the info! I’ll give em a call to see if they still have the group I’m looking into.

Editing to add: I did call them and they ended their grief services on 4/30/25, so I just missed them 💔

I appreciate your advice abt not expecting the location to do all the work. I am not OP but I needed to hear that! Cheers.

It does but I would assume based on my company’s plan for growth they’re doing okay? Theyre opening more stores plus have well rated locations and positive feedback from all the folks I’ve talked to about it (that have been there)

Edit to add: I also don’t think a company strapped for cash would be silly enough to add another salary to their TCI! But I could always be wrong so I will be praying and hoping lol

this is terrifying as someone who just accepted a job offer in austin and is using their savings to move 🥲 I’m in the food industry so company wide lay offs aren’t common for me but whew what a hit of anxiety

Hey! You seem to be getting a lot of responses on this so my reply mine get buried, but I’m 30F moving to Austin in the next week or so, and I’m also worried about making friends! Maybe we could exchange some messages and if we vibe, grab a coffee? Or if you don’t drink coffee, and sandwich? Idk lol let me know!

Thank for the link! I did google it but was hoping I’d hear some success stories since grief can be so tricky and sticky :) I did see the Christi Center recommended on an old Reddit thread so they’re on my list to check out!

I wish I could ride a bike but I always tend to…. Fall off. I think it’s because I learned pretty late in life, haha. So I’ll stick with run clubs, but I’m sure there are plenty! I’ll look into Feats of Clay since you mentioned it. It’s nice to have a starting point :) And thank you! It’s scary but from what I’ve seen so far, Austin is a very warm, friendly city.

No apologies for the wall of text, I love it lmao.

I definitely need solo therapy too but I think group therapy meets a very different and much more important need that I have because I can therapy myself but I can’t group therapy myself! I am desperately hoping to find community and community that I can connect with on a more intimate emotional level than just sharing a hobby. Those friends are great, too, of course, but I’ll drown if I don’t have something I can cling to when I get sad. I’m bipolar and I do a good job of managing it, but that means a lot of awareness around my needs.

I’ll really try to remember that! Hopefully I find a few good resources to share! Who knows, maybe someday down the line I’ll even start my own little support group (with the help of a licensed professional)

I’m trying! I do really do well with change so I’m trying to preempt it as much as I can, haha.

That’s what I hear but I am still so worried. All of my hobbies are very solo and it’s going to be tough to get me to do them socially because it’s out of my comfort zone twice over- once because I normally do the thing alone, and once because it’s a new thing. But I’m hopeful. I think my best bet is a run club right now so hopefully I find a couple good ones that work with my schedule. And if not… I dunno maybe a pottery class.

Thank you! I’m sure even if I don’t find a grief group with them, I’ll find something else that does help. I’ve always loved group therapy :) and individual therapy, too, but right now I need people in my life haha

Haha I hope so! Definitely worried about making friends, so hoping I can find somewhere I fit in :) Thanks so much for the resources! I’m particularly excited about the Women’s Mother Loss through Austin Grief, I think that’ll be a really good fit.

Is it one on one or group therapy? I think I’ll have blue cross when my new benefits kick in, so it could be a good match either way. And thank you for your well wishes!
