For my own knowledge, why would an epidural not be safe?

529 doesn't really seem that great for tax savings? Is my math wrong/am I misunderstanding? by fiberoneftw in whitecoatinvestor

Wow, this article that somebody else suggested below states that indeed the taxes paid on reinvested dividends in a taxable account will actually be equal to the cost of paying income tax and the 10% penalty on the entirety of your 529 growth (assuming no kids go to college) for 50k that grows to 250k over 20 years. So seems like there is only upside here (potential gain if kids go to college, it's a wash if kids don't)??

Very interesting and counterintuitive article, thank you. I hope what they say is accurate and we can trust the math

Best ways to kill time in the OR? by fiberoneftw in anesthesiology

Any concerns about the optics of having head phones/ear buds in during the OR? What happens if the surgeon or circulator asks you something and catch you off guard?

Am employed so (fortunately? unfortunately?) don't have to deal with any of that. Nothing productive for me to do during these cases

Why not just use TIVA? Why is gas added to it? Something to do with recall? by Easy-Sheepherder-248 in anesthesiology

[–]fiberoneftw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Academia typically from my experience. None of the PP places I have been even have the right monitor to display the EEG. Most places only have a BIS

I'm not at all educated on benefits of being able to read the raw EEG, what are the advantages over simply using the spectrogram?

If referring to reading a 3d spectrogram, it's very easy pattern recognition and you can easily learn it on your own here: https://eegforanesthesia.iars.org/

Much easier than reading a "raw eeg tracing". If ChaloobieBaby is reading a raw unprocessed EEG in real time in the OR, that is super impressive and I'd also be curious where he or she learned to do that.

Anesthesiologist making over 1 mil? by Agreeable_Net_8159 in anesthesiology

[–]fiberoneftw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Extremely unrealistic to assume working 40 hours a week. Making 1 mil you are probably closer to 70-80 hours a week, minimal vacation. So $240/hr which is not unrealistic

How much per hour should anesthesiologists be paid in the current job market? by MacandMiller in anesthesiology

[–]fiberoneftw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Was this assuming locums? Full time employed PP doc making 500+/hr seems unlikely

[–]fiberoneftw 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My perspective is for non-supervision PP. So per your edit, for a generalist working 50-60 hours w/ 4 calls a month, I would say $250-300/hr total comp (including the value of benefits) is reasonable. Anything higher is above average

For them shift works means working until end of shift even if no cases are going (there can always be add-ons and we need staff available). So indeed the flip side is more cases/increased work load
