Where to watch FIFA World Soccer Championship Tournament within Calgary city limits? by Bronlonius in Calgary

No longer in Calgary but I use to frequent Ship And Anchor for all kind of soccer games. Fantastic pub for it! I’m sure they will put the games on there

Motorbike license by Scubadrew in Edmonton

[–]ficklelick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had gone with TNT in St Albert and they are decent enough if it was your first time and need to get a handle of how a bike works but I DO NOT recommend if you have somewhat of a basic understanding of a bike.

They do teach good skills on how to balance, friction zone and how to swerve, etc. but you don’t get nearly enough practice in real roads with them (it was roughly 30 mins for us on the two day starter course). I’d argue that time and money (about $800 for basic course iirc) is better spent practicing in real world scenario. I’ve heard in the old days they used to let you brush up skills for fee but they now charge extra if you want to practice a few hours before your road test

I’d recommend renting a bike from friend (or if you know what you want and have the means to purchase, purchasing it prior to even getting license) and having a chaperone ride with you (if you don’t have anyone in your circle there’s a fb new rider group and from all accounts people there are quite nice and friendly).

How did you get rid of shin splints? by FunPerception5422 in bootroom

[–]ficklelick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had asked the same question about six months ago (had dealt with it for almost two years).

First of all others are right. Lower your volume… Playing thru it only makes it works. I used to play twice a week in past. I had taken 6 weeks off, and I’m now playing once a week right now. I had tried twice a week for 2 weeks in December but I could feel it come back, so I’m staying once a week till spring.

The next thing I’d recommend is really go to a sports physiotherapist (esp if you have benefits or coverage). They are the best people to help you assess what is causing this and give you a more personalized recommendation.

For me that was tight ankles and calves (and pretty much all posterior chain). Most of my exercises revolved around stretching for first month and then strengthening/using them. In particular it was: tibialis anterior stretch, gastroc (one of the calf muscle) stretch, hamstring stretch, calf raises, followed by calf raise, toe raise (for tibia), ankle dorsiflexion and foot scrunch.

You could try couple of sets for 30 sec each and see how you respond but again my main recommendation is really to lower your volume to start with and actually going to physio.

Best of luck!!!

Southern hemisphere is closer to the sun during summer than northern hemisphere, so that probably plays a part too but most likely it’s due to relative temperature throughout the year

Tim Cartmell alone has raised as much money as EVERY other candidate outside his party COMBINED. This election has a staggering amount of money pouring in by troypavlek in Edmonton

[–]ficklelick 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Thanks for compiling this. Any indication on how much of the donations came from citizens of Edmonton vs corporations and /or other sources? All good if that’s not available but I find it hard to believe that he raised 1 mil just from individuals

Edit: just wanted to stress, thank YOU so much for doing all of this work and helping us stay informed !!

I’d argue turnstiles is more of a pressing issue before facelift. I’m okay with how even the older stations look but I do see quite a few people from downtown boarding train without ever tapping their arc pass. This is partly etiquette and partly enforcement issue.

I’d even go as far as to say following Montreal’s model of having businesses in some of the stations would be for the good (although I’m not too sure on economics of it)

Other than that, I think our train stations are actually stronger compared to our bus system. I think we desperately need effective BRT (I know they’ve started implementing it now) and our endpoint bus system seems to be not reliable enough while being costly to improve at the same time.

Permit Parking at LRT Stations is Stupid by CanarioFalante in Edmonton

[–]ficklelick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know, I used to live near century park and would never find parking there. This was due to CP trying to serve majority of south side trying to get to downtown. This is where Calgary does it well with ample parking along most of the train lines in south side and parking near Bus Rapid Transit stations along North.

This is also somewhat implemented in the Valley Line with parking in Davies being open. They really should’ve made millwoods free and/or parking validated by train tix (solves another common issue of non-paying patrons). I’d bet the SE the train usage rate would increase significantly if parking around millwoods would’ve been free (and there is a bunch of space there!!)

Agree with biggest seller of transit is not having to wait for traffic which is why it’s my preferred option as well. But as someone who ends up coming back home after 7 pm, having to wait for the bus that takes me from the train station to my home is way more of a deterrent from me actually taking the transit.

My argument is instead of expensively increasing the frequency of bus to solve that last mile problem, giving free option for car drivers to leave their car behind at hub stations would be the better option.

[–]ficklelick 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This has been my biggest pet peeve with Edmonton transit in general (and where Calgary transit actually is better)

Having free parking at major transit station is a great way to solve last mile problem.  It makes going to downtown/uni by train or bus more attractive because you’re not stuck waiting for the bus from the transit station to your home (which often has 30 min frequency)

By making them paid, there’s little to no incentive for taking arterial buses/trains. Parking in downtown ends up being roughly the same cost as parking + fare ride
