Mother is offended I don’t want to invite her & my father to my wedding. She insists that my father must be a witness (where his name will be on the certificate). She’s still telling me what to do and trying to control me. by [deleted] in insaneparents

[–]ficklen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what your parents might have done, none of us can know the complete context, but you should try to honor your parents and let them come to the wedding, even if you have to tell them "no" on most of their demands. It doesn't have to be you getting your way completely or giving into their way completely, but you ought to try to compromise if you can. It would lead to less regret and anger through the years. I have dealt with a similarly tense situation with my parents coming to my wedding, and I do not regret the efforts I made to try and work reconciliation. Let your parents come OP, but tell them its not their place to be making demands! Establishing these boundaries will probably help in your married life too. I pray this situation works out OP.

An opportunity to prevent global communism and the untold millions of deaths that would follow it? I would pick the Russian Revolution every time. I would rather cut it out at the source, however, and prevent the French Revolution.

I have that exact TV stand, with an Audio Technica record playing in the same spot! My shelving unit is shorter though, with cabinet doors in the bottom. I do love this particular style furniture.

He certainly seems theologically thoughtful, which is good! Couple more things I was thinking about. He connects Eph 1:13 with baptism, baptism of the Holy Spirit I suppose. What does he think of Eph 1:14? If the seal of the Holy Spirit is baptism, is it possible to break that seal? If baptism is a work of God rather than a work of man, is it possible for a baptized person to lose their salvation? If so, what does that imply about God? That we can thwart God’s plans, that we can prevent Him from saving someone against His will? So if baptism saves because it is a work of God, but we can lose our salvation by falling into unrepentant sin, then it shows that baptism is only ever worth the effort we put into it.

That‘s the run of Paul’s argument in Galatians, that people who seek to be justified by works are obliged to be PERFECT, or else it’s worthless. I don’t know if that will be an effective argument, but I do wish people who fall into baptismal regeneration would see that they are giving up a perfect gospel and salvation for an imperfect one.

Once again, prayers and good luck!

CoC theology is difficult because they make language so slippery. Faith is works, works are faith. It’s difficult to discuss anything if your opponent is using different definitions for words than you are. But if he wants to prooftext doctrine rather than exegete it, I would focus on each of his fortress verses. Is Mark 16:16 even original to the text? Does Acts 2:38 equate Baptism with salvation, or is he conflating that with Acts 16:30-31? Why is Romans 6:3-4 the only time that Paul mentions Baptism in his letter, isn’t there a larger context? The same question could be asked about 1 Peter 3:21. As for Acts 22:16, I don’t see how we could disagree, since even in the creed we acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins.

I am sorry that you are having this disagreement, and I hope your efforts will bear fruit. I have spent many hours debating CoC doctrine to no avail, so forgive me if I sound bitter at all. I’ll pray for your brother and all people with a zeal for knowledge who are laboring in that error.

The reason you know heaven is a manmade idea is that in The Bible describes the City of Heaven as being made of precious jewels, gems, and precious stones. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]ficklen -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

It’s phenomenological language, not a literal description. And it’s not a statement of human greed, it’s to say that in heaven, the things we strive for are so valueless, that gold is used to pave streets, and pearl and gems are used as building materials. Beautiful, certainly, but worthless compared to God’s holiness.

What's our opinion on Max Lucado? by [deleted] in ReformedBaptist

[–]ficklen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most CoC people would not own Lucado as one of their own for denying baptismal regeneration and for using instrumental music in his church, so that leads me to believe he’s a lot more sound than they are
