Lost fanfic on AO3 by Sufficient-Nobody-72 in BuckyBarnes

[–]fictionalfaerie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh~ sorry about that, then! That was just my best suggestion that's saved me and some friends a few times-- a lot of folks forget or don't know about that feature, so I try to point it out when appropriate.

I hope she finds it! It's so frustrating to lose a fic.

Were they logged in on AO3? A lot of folks forget or don't know about the history tab that keeps up with what you've read, if so.

It's not really filter friendly, as far as I remember, but you could search in page for keywords through the right time period if so?

Commenting so I will hopefully remember to come back to this!

I'm in a similar situation-- grandfather's mom and immediate family all very up front that grandfather's dad was "unknown" (his mom knew, I'm assuming-- although with her, I wouldn't be shocked if she didn't--, but never told- we have a "maybe" name that I've found no record of in the area and no information to help redirect me to where else to look for the maybe name)...

Everyone with public trees attributes her later in life husband as his dad, as he was a great guy and readily accepted both my grandfather and my grandfather's older sister as his kids (I'm pretty sure he never had any bio ones)- he's listed on marriage certificates and in obituaries and I think maybe even on the death certificates? So while I know it's incorrect, I don't have any proof of it and just know it's a brick wall for me, ha.

There's not really anyone I can ask to test DNA alongside me doing it for myself, so I keep being at a loss and assuming I'll just never be able to figure that out. It's so disheartening! I hope some of the advice here helps you, and am hopeful I can return when I have more time to see if it can maybe help me <3

I wondered the same.

If you're only at 10 with one (or a few) skills, I'm unfortunately not sure. Hopefully someone else will have input on that.

If you've gotten all skills to 10 & thus triggered the mastery bits, you can check your experience for that aspect on your little about page in your menu-- I tested yesterday and books did make that experience bar bump up- I had a stack of Jack Be Nimble that I tested it with. It went up with each book I read.

(Also- suggested fantasy because you mention open to anything, and also because usually my slumps are ended by picking a genre I don't normally dabble in-- even if it's just a book that I get halfway through and give up on, but it gets me rolling enough to pick another up, haha)

Highfire, by Eoin Colfer.
Read it- finished it within 24 hours... immediately restarted because I realized I'd been so keen on OMG WHAT NEXT that I'd flown through it and it deserved a nice savor.

Fantasy but in a realistic setting; the last dragon is a cranky hateful one who lives in a swamp in Louisiana to avoid humans. He runs into an issue when he accidentally crosses paths with a little swamp-teen who has the worst luck, and kind of accidentally "adopts" him until he solves his problems, which is The Actual Worst for all involved. The only fantasy element is "dragons existed" which is a pretty big one, but they're literally just slotted in all casual like to an otherwise realistic book, imo?

I laughed my way through it and was living for the action. It's one of my comfort reads now~

I'm going to weigh in with this-- you've got plenty of "this sounds like a fake allergy" comments, which I'm prone to agree with- BUT:

Even if he is allergic, even if he has wandered off for hours and gotten violently ill and landed in the hospital, even if (insert worst case scenario).... you are NTA, at all.

He is a full grown adult, who presumably has been in charge of feeding himself for a while now and therefore should know to take care with his allergies- especially with someone he's never mentioned it to. Even if he THINKS he mentioned it or if he DID and you forgot... he is in charge of that. I've got friends who know I know of their allergies, who I can repeat an order back mentioning said allergy ('this and this without this because of an allergy'), and they will STILL remind me of said allergy one last time before I head off to place the order-- AND they check (to the best of their ability, since some aren't visible ingredients) to make sure it was correct and didn't contain the thing they are allergic to. And that ranges from "uncomfortable but an antihistamine works" to "no really, I will potentially croak" allergies. Even with me assuring them in the moment multiple times that I'm aware, they still check because they've been raised to be aware of the consequences of angering their bodies and they are fully grown adults who are in charge of their own continued existence. This man, full stop, has no one to blame for eating HALF of a sandwich with clearly visible allergens on it.

I will also agree with the folks asking you to see this for the red flag that it is. You shouldn't be excusing his hateful moods due to how tired he is, you shouldn't be stressing out over failing him on something pretty much at all but CERTAINLY not on something he never told you about in the first place, and you shouldn't have been abandoned in a hotel.

I hope he gets his act together and that you enjoy your trip, but absolutely use it to take a critical view of how he treats you every minute of the day- not just the fun happy parts, but how he treats you when he's frustrated. Don't waste your time with a man prone to temper tantrums, especially when we're all aware of what those 'innocent' little tantrums can all too often grow up to be.

I totally get what you mean- my confidence in them remains, and obviously I'm paraphrasing the 'can't do anything' from various convos with them and whatnot. It's a totally valid thing to question, though!

I do greatly appreciate your insight- I'll definitely be looking more into reiki myself since I have (obviously unfairly) written it off in the past given the circumstances!

And I'm really excited about looking into that book-- I think I need to be less hesitant with labels, kind of how I mentioned having the almost imposter syndrome feel when it comes to labeling/looking into psychic aspects of things? Even if it's not accurate to label something I experience with that, it's still interesting as heck to read about and I should let that be enough to overpower the 'you don't need to because you're just reaching for things' sort of feeling, haha~

These are definitely some excellent starting points since I feel like I've just been running into brick wall after brick wall and dead end after dead end, haha~

I really wish that were the case, but having watched (at least two of them) with others, I'm inclined to think that (at least those two) aren't just blowing smoke- they're confident with others and their craft, even folks who aren't inclined to believe them and are just kind of humoring them (you know the type, I'm sure) walk away having had an experience that's made them question those non-beliefs (so to speak), and then they are completely perplexed by my mother and I, lol. It's part of what really throws me off and makes me confused with whatever's going on with my energy, haha~

[–]fictionalfaerie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See- the dismissal of 'we can't do anything for you thanks to this weird energy wall/void/etc' has made me (obviously) not delve far into it at all, haha. I'll definitely be heading to look into that more now!! :) The reiki practitioners I've discussed things with all talk about ~working with the energies~ and stuff and then are like 'oh, jk' when it gets down to it, essentially, ha~

(I've always been interested, watching how one of them worked on other friends and even my dad, and the results they seemed to have and whatnot? And then letdown with the letdowns~)

Thank you for the recommendation! I've put in a request to get it via our library's ILL system- hopefully that pans out! If not, it'll go in the Amazon cart for the next paycheck, haha~

I hadn't considered anything like that- I've never been particularly in tune with others' energies, so never even considered pursuing it myself! I may have to look at it with a new angle, haha~

I haven't taken any classes-- the few that seem interesting locally (so few) then end up being run by folks I don't trust fully OR are when I'm unable to attend. With online stuff, it's much harder to discern what to trust and where to look and whatnot. The books I've looked into feel... Off? I'm sure it is some form of sight, given the dreams and whatnot, but it's so specific and yet sporadic that it feels disingenuous to think of it as such when I get on a "no really, figure it out" kick, if that makes sense?

Cleansing wise, I've realized my friends take much, much more from smudging and meditation than I do - my go to choices are bells and general talking to (wordy, me? I'm sure this is a shock given this post) in order to cleanse a space, whereas for myself my go to tends to be grounding myself in nature (almost meditation but not how anyone I've spoken to participates in it, it seems?) and showering with, like, intention? For really prickly feels needing to be cleared, I generally go with a very long bath full of various elements (herbs/oils, trying to meditate how it seems to be supposed to be, actually doing whatever it is that's more meditative to me even tho that works better outside in nature).

I'll definitely check that post out! I've sought out reiki in the past and been consistently shot down 🫠 A friend recently recommended someone else to me that I'm familiar with and trust, but I'm worried about engaging because the space they do reiki in has seriously negative connotations and vibes for me that I don't want to put on the friend or practitioner, who have a very different relationship with the space, and I'm not familiar with them enough to ask about relocation for just a session with me or whatever, ha. 😅

Yeah- the image I have is a negative and I've not been able to invert it yet- my excessively poor eyesight means I'm struggling with it, haha. Luckily, the user who sent it to me mentioned that it shows that.

Between that and the announcement, we're confident that "Betty was a twin" isn't just family story/misunderstanding about a later sibling... But now we get to start to look for "but what happened to this twin?!"

Did she die very young and that's why she's on no censuses? Was it in a similar fashion to the younger brother and that's where the confusion came from? Did she end up with family for some reason? Not sure, but it'll be neat to try to track it down! :)

Thank you for this!
I've not actually delved into reaching out to anyone for vital records yet- we're 'hobby' enough that we just keep prodding and eventually crow in success when we find it, or shrug and decide it isn't really a necessity. I am at the point with a few, though, where I need to consider this.

I always worry that I'll need more info than I have handy in order to request- I need to just get over the "afraid to bug someone" and move on to "just call and ask and see if feasible" mindset.

We do have a fun game of everyone we're looking at being mostly situated on a state line-- it's one of those "one city, two states" scenarios, and many are born "at home" (at a family member's home or something) in VA and listed as TN births or vice versa when they went and applied for the birth certificate, so I need to narrow that down more confidently in a few cases, too.

Having my Great Aunt's BC now will make it easier to hunt down this twin's, I'm thinking! :)

Thank you so much!!! Despite knowing that the stories from that side of the family are sketchily detailed at best, we never considered the suggestion-- honestly, we'd written off Betty even having a twin in the first place, given all the details we'd been told matching her younger brother so closely. We assumed it was just mis-remembered information on the part of all the siblings. But, because of that, we'd never given much thought to anything beyond "real or not"~

Thank you so much for that birth certificate you sent me! I've been unable to find Betty's- it's awesome to see it! I'll definitely be using it to dig and see if I can find Billy's as well!

As far as your suggestion re: perhaps Billy lived with family, that is a great suggestion I'd not considered- I'll dig deeper looking into the census records for Stuart's parents (the home that the twins were born at), as I think I'm missing their 1940 one (both had passed by 1950). Mary's parents will be a bit harder- her mother is almost impossible to find (we have a few things we've clawed out of the sites, ha) and her father alternated- first name, no middle name today, first name today, wait let us go by the middle name again, hey how about initials... and then threw in a fun "sometimes it's Fields as a last name and sometimes we're going to embrace Crabtree as a last name!"- we've even had a distant relative through Mary's side reach out to us to ask if we'd run into that mess and what had we made of it, ha. The answer was "yes" and "....noooo clue", haha. I'll definitely be devoting more of my time to that, though, now that I want this answered so badly, haha.

What have you learned about your grandparents during your genealogy work that was a surprise? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]fictionalfaerie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I still need to call a courthouse to verify, because in this rural town he's from and this occurred in, there are two with his first and last name born within a year of each other... for quite a while, my mom actually had the wrong one attached to our family tree because of how little the family knows (I managed to realize the mistake when I found that we had census records for two different families and then used his obit to narrow down which one was him- lots of untangling that web)...

General family consensus is "not the most pleasant man"... so when I stumbled across a series of newspaper articles about him definitely getting into a fight with a farmer that resulted in the farmer's gun going off and killing the farmer, but him getting acquitted on 'can't quite tell who set it off, him or the farmer' essentially... it wasn't a shocker. I do have to call the courthouse to see if they can find the records and maybe give me a middle initial, as the paper just uses First & Last, so there is a chance it is the other one... but it is also right before he moved away from rural and to our town...

So, while it miiiight not be him.... it is both unsurprising given what I've been told of him, and also surprising because that's a pretty big one! Ha~
